Hi Everyone

I am new to the forum and am undiagnosed at this point. I have listed my story under the 'my story' section. Just wondering if anyone has had doxycycline help their diarrheah?

I understand that some people have their fistulas etc treated with antibiotics, but are they used to treat crohns inflammation / flares too?

My son got Crohn's soon after using another cycline, minocycline, for acne. Of course we don't know if it was related.

It's been studied and research suggests an increase in IBD diagnosis from this drug. I have been on it post diagnosis but didn't notice a difference in terms of my crohns.

My issues started before I was on the doxycycline, and when put on the doxy it relieved my d symptoms. Just wondering if anyone else has had relief of the diarrhea with antibiotics?

Generally the two antibiotics used in the initial treatment of a flare are Metronidazole (Flagyl) and/or Ciprofloxacin.

It is believed by many GI’s that due to the nature of Crohn’s, being a disease that penetrates the bowel wall and therefore breaking the barrier to a sterile environment, that infection is present and the antibiotics will help clear that.

Flagyl also has some anti-inflammatory properties. There are studies out there that also indicate that it can be useful over a longer period of time, particularly in the post operative resection setting. My son was on Flagyl for 3 months pre-op and 3 months post-op. Did it help? I don’t know for sure but with other medication it did help stabilise him in the lead up to surgery and post-op…well he is still in remission and that was over 3 years ago.
He was also on Augmentin Duo Forte for the 3 months pre-op due to an intra-abdominal abscess.

So yes, certain antibiotics are an integral part of Crohn’s treatment as infection is often a characteristic of the disease and others used to treat specific complications of the disease like abscesses.

Yes, I did experience improvement from doxycycline. My D disappeared and I had normal bowels for the first time in years. I got my life back for the three months I was on it.
