hey everyone! I've been hearing lots of stuff on probiotics lately, and how good they are for people with CD...does anyone here use them? how do they make you feel? did your doc recommend them, or did you start them all on your own?

Hi! My surgeon gave me a free week's supply of Florastor which I have not finished yet. I already went to Walgreens and purchased another bottle. I had a small bowel resection on 2/11 and am going to try to keep remaining intestines healthy if possible.

I use probiotics and prebiotics, I originally started with them after a long course of antibiotics because I thought my symptoms at that point might have been associated with a lack of 'good bacteria' shall we say. Anyways obviously that wasn't the case in the end but oh well. When I went into hospital and was diagnosed my Gastro actually did ask whether I'd tried them.

Then my Mum read that they were good for Crohn's so I just carried on taking them. I'll be honest I don't feel much different but considering I'm on so much medication and still flaring I think it's going to take a longer time to really know whether they're helping or not. I don't see them doing any harm though.

At the moment I have ones called Prebio 7, which have a load of different bacterias in them and also a chewable acidophilus because I think that was a recommended one.

Three caplets of Garden of Life's Primal Defence, plus a probiotic yogurt smoothie every day.

Yogurt is probably your best natural source.

I have used VSL#3 in the past. They are kinda expensive to buy.
My GI gives them to me when he gets some samples in. The problem is that
the sales rep is only allowed to leave a certain number of packages with
the DR. so to be fair its like first come first serve.

I would highly recommend this product.Try and goggle it for more info.

I use one called Florajen 3.
I could'nt tell you if it has helped or not, I'm only on my second bottle.

I've been doing the yogurt but thats about it....and I was told that the supplement form was the best way to go but I buy enough drugs, I will just keep eating my yogurt...at least I'm getting some probiotics.

I've heard good things about acidophilus...I think I may pick some up...do you think this is something I should be talknig with my GI about?

I just talked to a pharmacist in the drug store next to my work, and apparently since I'm on Imuran, I should NOT be taking probiotics...she said it could cause infection.

My doctor recommends them... I take Sustenex. Kind of expensive... but I think worth it. So many things can lower the good bacteria... and I feel better on them. I'd be really bad at keeping up with yogurt. I think everyone with bowel issues should use them!

Probiotics

My doc recommended, no, insisted, that I take probiotics as an aid. He indicated that yogurt does not contain enough to be meaningful and told me to get caps with billions of live cells. Also, you need to get the probiotics with an enteric coating that will allow for passage thru the stomach and make it to the large intestine where it's needed.

I've been taking (2) caps a day for about (4) months now and can't say there is any noticeable improvement in my condition. But I guess this is one of those things like vitamins...you take 'em as a preventative measure, not a cure.
