I have a colonoscopy on Monday and have different prep because I can't keep normal prep down. Anyway, I've been introduced to use a fleet enema 1 hour before the procedure and I am NOT allowed to drink anything (not even water) after I use it. But the I structuons caution that you should be drinking plenty of water within the first half an hour as it can cause severe dehydration....so now I'm scared of the test AND the enema. Lol. Has anyone done one and then NOT had anything to drink after and been ok?? It says it can damage your kidneys/heart of you don't drink any fluids...

1 fleet enema should not be an issue. Are you having a full colonoscopy or just a sigmoidoscopy? The enema will not clean you out fully for a colonoscopy.

What types of 'normal' prep have tried in the past? Do they have you on a liquid only diet the day or two before the procedure, and how about laxative pills?

Hi,
It might be best to call your colonoscopy unit and ask advice of your GI on this
Sometimes water can be helpful to the process but maybe there is some reason your GI has said not to drink water .

I was specifically told not have anything to eat or drink even water, after the enema.

I am on a clear fluid diet starting tonight and ducolax sat/sun night. Enema Monday morning an hour before the colonoscopy.

I'm not concerned about the laxative pills. I'm more concerned about the dehydration and warning about drinking plenty of fluid to avoid kidney and heart damage.

If the enema is only an hour before the procedure there shouldn't be any worry. Remember, you get hooked up to an iv when you are there and they give you fluids. Just make sure you drink lots over the weekend.

My husband had fleet enema before his surgery. He was told not to drink water before the surgery anyway, so he didnt.

Lisa has this right. With only an hour to go before your procedure you will be fine as long as you keep your fluid intake up over the weekend. I have always found Fleets pretty easy to do.
The issue with laxative pills is more related to obstruction type problems, at least in my case. Because they have a different mechanism of action they can possibly cause further injury to some crohn's patients. Always worth asking about it in advance. Fleets don't have that same issue as they act pretty much locally. If you can administer it it will clear out whatever is in the area.
Good luck!

I had a fleet for my sig colonoscopy and it was easy to do. I had to have a special low risidual diet the day before and didnt eat past 8pm the night before. No drink other than water to take my pills down on the morning. I didnt have any drink after the fleet until about 6 hours after my fleet. And I didnt have a IV or anything either. I was fine and I have kidney infections and stones a lot. So I reacon youll be ok. It does make you thirsty as anything after a few hours. I was told to drink loads of water to help flush out the gas stuff they pump in you and to help not get dehydration. Hope it goes well and good luck.

Don't worry about the dulcolax pills either, you'll be fine, chances of you getting any bad effects from the dulcolax and fleet are slim to 0 under the circumstances, you can easily hydrate yourself with fluids after your test. Good luck with your scope!

I wonder why ducolax is even used when you have chronic diarrhea? What's the point? Isn't everything going to come out on its own? Lol.

Has anyone taken the ducolax while their intestines were in bad shape? I was suppose to take it 3 hours ago but I haven't as I'm terrified it's going to cause pain or some other damage. So anyone who has taken while flaring please let me know it's not going to hurt.

Also just came across a post where they were told not to drink anything red or blue before the exam. I was told not to drink anything red or purple. Been drinking blue Gatorade all day and had some blue jello. I wonder if that will be an issue?

I drink blue Gatorade with my preps, haven't had any problems with it. Just definitely not red, purple, orange or the pink one I believe.

On the taking dulcolax when flaring, I've done it a few times and didn't have any additional pain or damage, so you should be fine with them, chance of a problem from those are slim to none.

Wishing you the best! :dance::hug::hang:
