What I though was a flare up before remicade, was a side effect from Asacol. My daughter was having pain and loose stools about 10 days before her remicade dose. Called the GI and he told me to stop Asacol and see what happens. One day with out it, loose stools gone. Pain started to decrease and after 4 days gone completely. She did have her Remicade today. Everything went good. Some blood test came abnormal, Need to talk to Doctor tomorrow.

I'm glad you found the cause of her pain and diarrhea....:ghug:

How long was she on Asacol before these side effects started?

Asacol like many other meds can have side effects .I've been on it for two years and do find that the BM can be looser but as long as I take it the bloody stools and cramping is kept to a minimum. I find that being consistant with the dose can help and it does take about three to four weeks to stabilize . These are only my findings but everyone is different .
Best of luck.
Peter

She has been on Asacol close to two years. So far 5 days with out it. Don't know what is next. I am going to wait a couple of days before calling GI about it. See how she does.
After remicade she always has loose stools for a couple of days, So far no more pain.

How are things going araceli? Have you had contact with the GI?

Dusty.

My son had problem with Asacol too. He couldn't walk after a week on it. Took 3 days for him to totally be back to normal and no pain after discontinuing it. It started in his thighs...each day new body parts added until he said he felt 90 yrs old. (My dad's 80 and he asked, is this how grandpa feels when he gets up or sits down or walks?) Just before doctor said, stop medicine, he couldn't even dress/undress himself. It was wierd

Hello, I have been kind of crazy lately. GI told us to wait and see how she does without asacol. We got the results from lab test that was done the day that she had the Remicade infusion. Liver enzymes are high. Gi I told me, it usually goes up after long time with remicade, that is too soon for her to be so high. He will monitor her until next dose, if still high or gets higher, He will have to stop the remicade infusions and switch to Humira. So know I am in the waiting game. My son had colo and endo last week. Pictures look good with the exemption of little inflammation in two parts of his colon. Doctor want to recheck biopsies to be completely sure. (Don't know about what) I don't have a Dx right know. Still having problems with getting a pediatric Rheumy. Got Vitamin D results back, Daughter 23, Son 17. I was surprised my son is lower than my daughter. I aged 10 years in only this past year. Thanks everybody for your support.

How is he doing with Humira?

Hi. Talked to GI yesterday about my son. Duodenum, Cecum, Descending Colon with mild nonspecific inflammation and granulomas present. Transverse colon mild nonspecific colitis, Sigmoid colon mild nonspecific acute colitis etc etc etc. There is more information about some kind of rare infection but I will let you know after He gets those test and I find out if it's positive.

No, only colonscopy and endoscopy. Biopsies came positive for chronic inflammation, granulomas, acute colitis, but also for Yersinia enterocolitic and colon TB. Infections that mimic Crohn's and causes an array of problems. So here we go for more tests. I am so confused and worried.

Wow, sounds like a whole gamut of abnormalities, but also, perhaps, some treatable causes. Hang in there! He'll get better.

How is he doing with Humira?

He's been on it for over 2 years. Overall I believe its helping him. We have been fighting some inflammation as of lately. We added Methotrexate a month ago and at today's visit she added Pentasa back in. (Since he had problems with Asacol). His labs said SED was up from 32 to 35 but his CRP was down from 1.6 to 1.1. At least it went down a little. I don't think he's at theraputic levels yet for MTX. I was told that takes 4-6 weeks and we are just a 4th dose.
If I think about life before Humira...it was bad! Its easy to forget those days since we've been on Humira so long and I start to complain about this hiccup we're having now...but I have to remember: he's not in constant pain...he runs and plays...and he eats without stomach pain. Before Humira crohn's had put a hold on his activity and happiness. We are just at a time to tweak the meds.

Got a call from Doctors assistant asking me to go to the office. Doctor is out of town but he want it to let me know as soon as possible... My Son has early stage Crohn's.
My heart is broken in thousand pieces.

Oh araceli...:ghug:...I am so so sorry to hear this. :(

Thinking of you and sending love and healing thoughts your way.

Dusty. xxx

Sorry to hear that! It is hard when it gets confirmed - we were also told it might just be a type of infection causing it, but no such luck.

Thanks everybody. Right now i am just thinking how to break the bad news to my son. I have till May 13, is when we see the Doc. to see what's next. So many things going on right now, My daughter's liver enzymes so high, we may have to stop remicade infusions, still no luck with getting a pediatric rheumy for my son and he having pain in his joints, now this. I feel like a boxer receiving punch after punch, getting up just to be in the floor again. The only difference is. A boxer fight is only 12 rounds.
