My son was just diagnosed with Crohn's . He is complaining of severe fatigue-would vitamin B12 shots help with that? Any advice?

He just started predisone yesterday.

Severe fatigue is a result of the body fighting inflammation
The prednisone will take time to get the inflammation down
Think weeks /months not days .
How old is your son and what maintence meds did they put him on?
Pred is great for short term (6-9 weeks)
But typically kids need a long term med and pred is given to get inflammation down and keep it down while the maintence med starts to build up to work
Typically these are immunosuppressants ( 6-mp/Aza/Imuran/Mtx)
Or biologics ( remicade /humira)
5-Asa ( pentasa asacol etc) are not recommended as monotherapy for crohns
They only treat the top layer of the intestine and crohns affects multiple layers

B-12 can be lower - blood tests could tell you
But since he was just dx inflammation is probably a bigger factor

Since he was just dx'd, I'd give the meds some time to work, especially if he's just starting a maintenance med (something more than pred).

How old is your son? If a teen, he could also be experiencing the fatigue that comes with growth during those years.

Ah yes, the severe fatigue! We know it well. And most of the time, our only symptom. In my son's case, his B-12 was never low. He was deficient in lots of other vitamins but never B-12.

I hope the steroids will perk him up. While not a long term solution, they should help with the inflammation and in turn improve nutrition absorption.

What other medications will he be on?

the GI should routinely test for B12 along with other blood tests when we have crohn's. You son has probably already been tested, but ask at next appointment to be sure. I have tested low recently, so I took my first shot today. It would be nice to have a boost of energy like many people are experiencing....

My son is 22 & finished his growth spurt. Doc has switched him to the prednisone yesterday after 1 week on budesonide but hasn't started him on any maintenance meds yet. He was hospitalized ~ 2 weeks ago for 4 days with severe enteritis. His blood work shows positive for ANCA marker but Doctor ordered more tests to be certain it is Crohn's before she starts him on other medication.
He had his appendix taken out 2 1/2 mo ago while at college but has complained he hasn't felt right since then (no appetite, no energy, nausea & cramping) . He has lost 30 lbs since March.

Is he anemic? My daughter's energy gets better with nutrition. The sicker she is, the more tired...
