back pain

What can cause pain on the right side in your back.. Ko was in lots of pain last night. Thought we were going to end up at the ER. Kota said his pain was horrible. I have already called GI this morning but will probably be waiting all day on a call back. If I even get a call back today.

Wasnt sure if anyone else has that pain. Thanks

Stephen used to get quite a bit of back pain before being diagnosed. His would be anywhere from his lower back, right up to shoulder blades (don't remember if it was one side in particular). We had always attributed it to hockey and slouching but GI now thinks it may have been his intestinal inflammation that was causing the back pain (it has completely disappeared since he started treatment for Crohns).

Do not use ibuprofen for pain relief as it can have negative GI side effects. My son used Tiger Balm ointment and found it helped significantly (its commonly sold in all drug stores, grocery stores here)! He also found massage helped - not sure how massage would help inflammation but, perhaps, the inflammation would cause the muscle to tighten, in which case, massage would help???

I have always found I have pain around right flank, think it is cramping and pain from inflammation. Sometime I think it was muscular as well as I was probably tensing those muscles to protect my stomach if that makes sense! I hope this helps!

V passed a kidney stone and had pain like that.
Kidney stones are an EIM of Crohn's, sadly.
Also could be radiating pain from his TI.

I hope everyone is having a good day.

We just got home from Cook Childrens Hospital. Ko had to have bllod work and allergy shot today. I have already talked to GI nurse 3 times today. Kotas pain on his right side has gotten worse. GI wants to get labs back before they do anything.I also had to call his kidney specialist because Ko said he is having a little discomfort when he urinates. He has a history of kidney stones. Hi first being when he was 2 Ko has taken over the counter urinary tract relief medicine before. I just wanted to make sure that him taking it now was okay. Since he is on all the other meds. Kidney office said to make sure it was okay with GI so waiting to hear back from Gi now.

Oh well you know all about kidney stones then, unfortunately :stinks:

Yes kidney stones suck. I myself have had 9 kidney surgeries becasue my stones are to large for me to pass

Sarah experienced pain over her right kidney region but hers wasn't related to kidney stones. It was hydronephrosis and it happened as a result of the inflamed terminal ileum pressing against the right ureter and in turn causing the urine to back up into the kidney, the kidney then swells causing pain.

On one of Matt's CT's it showed he was also in the early stages of hydronephrosis but treatment brought the inflammation under control and it resolved.

Dusty he has had this pain off and on for years. When we went to the hospital and they finally figured out he had Crohns He was having this same pain.
The hospital sent us home saying it was a UTI. I was like no its not its something else. The next day we were admitted into the hospital. Kidney looked okay at that time. Within the next few days after colonoscopy they were saying it was crohns. Gi said he thought it was UTI becasue he has never seen anyone ike Kota that has a kidney disease and also has Crohns.

But I remember for at least 2 years he has had this pain that comes and goes. But when he has it its really bad.3 or 4 times of going to the hospital and them saying oh its nothing he just needs to poop or yeah he has blood in his urine it must be UTI. Duh he always has blood in his urine. Now he doesnt want to go to the hospital becasue he says they will say its nothing or he needs to poop. He also went once that they did a milk and molasses enima. This was the worse thing he says he has ever had done. It is th eone thing that sticks out in his mind more than anything else. But they also made him walk down the hallway to a restroom with poop running down his legs. It was horrible. I was fighting back the tears. When we got to the restroom and I started to clean him up. I remember him looking at me and saying Mommy I am so glad you are here. I couldnt do this without you by my side. Yeah I couldnt fight the tears any longer. He is such a sweetie. God blessed me more than I could have even imagined when he made me Ko mommy

This thread is worrying me. My (undiagnosed) son, age 6, has had several bouts of back pain. It doesn't last super long; half an hour, maybe, but it is sometimes extreme - brings tears and he is gasping as he breathes, you know? It is middle right side and can be extreme; last time I was terrified it was his kidney. BUT, it seems to be relieved by urinating and as with every symptom my son has, it comes and goes seemingly at random. (I'm talking over a period of months, I do not think he has a UTI.) Is this at all consistent with what you all are describing re: kidney stones or hydronephrosis?

I know I did some google sleuthing the last time and found something somewhere about that pain being caused by backed up urine and children holding it too long (which he doesn't I don't think)..I seem to recall something there about it being relieved by urination. But I can't find any of that now, can't remember what terms I used to google, etc. Ugh! I actually have not really talked to his GI about this. Maybe I should.

UTI I would always rule them out if the suggest as is possibility. My middle daughter had a kidney infection as a two year old, her symptoms were high temp and vomiting (bile). One piece advise I remember was if the test is ususual it needs to be cultured.

Can still remember a test she had in emergency as a three year old (some 12 years later). Where the doctor explained that it did not look like a infection but he would have it cultured anyway because it didn't look quite right and send us home.

The next day we had a phone call from the hospital asking us who our local doctors were and me explaining that they are appointment only. The hospital said don't worry that just take her down and we will ring them.

We got the doctors and were seen in 5 minutes, and yes it was a infection.

Don't take any chances with the kidney, due to this one infection Rachel has a scar of her kidney which may result in high blood in larger life.

thanks- am pretty sure he doesn't have a UTI. Just don't know what he does have, if anything. Sigh.
