Hello fellow stoma friends. It's me again! So sorry.
I have a question.
My bag keeps coming away and peeling off in the exact same place every time.
It happened to the one my stoma nurse put on as well as the two I have.
It's still very early days (day 6) so maybe it is swelling? :/
It isn't peeling all off just lifting away, should I change the bag?

Thanks!

Are you just talking about the edge of the bag or the whole thing peeling and leaking? If it just the edge I just put tape one it to keep it down.

Yes you can use medical tape for that. Mine would do that a lot just after surgery. Seems not to do it as much now. I'm 12 weeks post-op. So it may be because of swelling as you said.

Ah it does sound like it. The bag lasts about 24hours before it starts to peel. I don't think it's the bag because its always in the same place.
Thanks for your help!!

I use the wings to add extra attachment.
I tried not using them once - the bag lifted and came off.
They are call Hydro Frames and are made by Welland.
They are fantastic.

I've tried so many things for this as when I first had it done, naturally I was anxious about leakage!
There's these wafer square things called 'Stomahesive Wafers' I think made by Convatec you can put on your skin and then stick the bag on top, giving a kind of double barrier which I find is a miracle! I also recently changed my bags from plasticy based ones to more foamy based ones which stick 100x better so maybe get a few samples of those too!

I do sometimes tape mine if a little pops up at the edge as Dukeis said, but I'd be wary about the output getting onto your skin and agitating it that way if the unpeeling is from the middle of the bag to the edge so ask about a cream or spray to keep your skin lovely too!

Hope you find a solution soon!

Thank you all :) sounds like there are all sorts of possible solutions. Ill definitely discuss with my stoma nurse once I see her next week. X

Hi there, I had a temp ily bag for nine months. I also had that happen to me UNTIL I found "plain Tincture of Benzoin"
Google it and order it. After I started using it I never had a bag peal back and almost no leaks at all. I could keep a bag on for 3 day most of the time.

When you change your bag it will come of with no problum when using it. No clean up needed.

If you try this you will never change your bag again without it.

PLEASE let me know how it works for you.

BTW, it only cost about $10 a bottle and it will last about 6 months.

I am also SO hungry.
Is this normal!? I have a high output so assuming I'm just not having enough time to absorb the food I'm eating.

It is very normal. The first couple of months you will be hungry. Like you said, you have high output, so everything just runs straight through. I was a big piggy and really enjoyed eating all of the high calorie foods there for awhile. Now that things have slowed down, I have gone back to being more sensible. But, it was fun while it lasted! :)

Did you find yous put on weight whilst being able to eat all of these lovely high calorie foods. Xxxx

Not in the first 4 months. Straight out of the hospital, I was down to 110 pounds. Over the next year, I got up to 115 pounds. It wasn't until I was back on estrogen and making myself eat more salty starchy things that I got back up to 119 pounds. I'm hovering at 117 pounds right now.

Ah brilliant. Thank you so much. I haven't been this hungry in a long time but do not want to put on a lot of weight!
At least I will be able to enjoy lots of yummy food with out the pain and awful symptoms of the Crohns!

Exactly! It's like a celebration for the first couple of months!!!!!

It took me over a year to put on weight.
I've just managed to squeeze on 4 kilos on prep for my reversal.
And I have eaten healthily, but without much limitation.

Ah okay. So it's not looking likely I will put it on too much.
I have battled with weight gain before due to wonderful steroids. And have only in the past year managed to lose the 2 and half stone! So I'm really not keen to out it on again.
But at the same time, am so hungry!!!

hey! Once again i have another question. i am so sorry guys!
I have just changed my bag and have seen that down the left hand side of the stoma site the stitches have started to unravel/come away and there is now a gap between the stoma site and my tummy skin. i have read it is called separation. wondering if anyone had this problem? i am worried about output getting in to the open bit.
also! how long after having the stoma fitted did the pain stop? the actual stoma site is painful, if anything getting worse. around the site it is now coming up in a bruise. is this normal?
it really is very sore.

I have also been using a different type of bag which hasnt been peeling off!

thanks so much for all of your help!

Is anything draining from the separation? I had what I thought was a separation and it turned out to be an abscess. You say that pain seems to be getting worse around the stoma. How long ago was your surgery? The pain should be getting better each day.

A week ago today
I don't know whether its getting worse or whether it feels worse as I am on less pain relief? Although its not much less at all.
Nothing draining, just a gap.

I was still in the hospital a week after my surgery. The ostomy nurse told me it was a separation and it wasn't to about 3 weeks after surgery an area next to my stoma became hard and much more painful that I knew it was an abscess. I was changing my bag and had my wife (who is a nurse) come look at it. She pushed on the hard area and noticed the the drainage. Not saying this is what you have, but you may want to have it looked at to be sure.

I had a massive gap - when I looked at it - it always freaked me out and made me cry. I couldn't work out how the gap would ever be bridged.
It looked shocking and was very very painful.

It did eventually heal and now it's just a little scar.
I used a really big barrier ring to help seal it up.
It also healed very quickly once I started taking Humira.

Yeh the gap is getting bigger and now around half the stoma. I sa the GP today who said there is no infection so I can wait until I see my stoma nurse next Tuesday.
He mentioned about a barrier ring, and thought that that would be what is used.
It really is so so painful :(

I had separation with my Stoma, it opened up about a month after my operation. It was so painful I had to be re-admitted for one night as it was thought I had an abscess, luckily I didn't.
My surgeon out me in touch with a much better Stoma nurse than the one I had at the hospital and she sorted it out perfectly.
I used convatec orabase paste in the gap, then placed a big hollister adapt barrier ring over the area that had separated. I also used coloplast two piece convex baseplates.
The gap granulated up really quickly with the paste, and the pain eased too, which was a big relief!
I hope you find something that works for you, I know it's seriously painful.

UPDATE!
having a right nightmare.
not seeing stoma nurse until Tuesday. I have changed my bag and the separation is now deeper and wider and pretty much all the way round.
my skin has also split and there is now like a slice in to my skin.
it seems to be retracting a little bit into me too.
eek! i am in so much pain and only have paracetemol. i have kept the sticky part/template fitting to the actual stoma rather than the skin line, so that no output goes in to the wound. but sticking it on to the open wound is so painful, and pulling it off is worse.
not sure if there is anything i can do to tide me over until Tuesday :/

That sounds horrific! I'm so sorry you are still dealing with this. I would go to the hospital if I were you. They can determine if you need immediate repair, antibiotics, pain meds, etc.

Do you think?
I never like making a fuss and have never been to A&E before! :/ It is so hard to know what to do, a Dr did see it last week and thought I could wait until I see the nurse but it has since gotten worse :/ Bit scary!
I think I have done a pretty good job of keeping it clean, there doesn't seem to be any infection or abscess. gah!

Don't worry about going to A&E. Its a Sunday and you have a genuine medical concern.

I was worried about it before I ever went but I've been three times now. (Once I was just sent away), and I promise it is not scary. Just be prepared to wait around a bit.

Good luck! (If you decide to go!)

Edited to add: Even if they just give you stronger pain meds or some advice on dressing it until Tuesday x x

Yep, I agree you should get yourself to A&E. You definitely shouldn't have to deal with something like that until Tuesday. I hope you get seen and can get something sorted. Big hugs x

Thanks so much guys, I am in a lot of pain unless I stay completely still.
My Mum is a nurse and isn't sure that i should go to a&e as a dr did see it on friday. although, it is now worse.
what do you think they would do when i get there? is there anything that can be done!

Hi! Well I held out until my stoma nurse came as she agreed to come early

She bought with her lots of stuff to dress the wound ad to try and heal it. She cleane it up and said I had done a good job keeping it clean as there was no infection. I now have all the equipment to deal with this myself so feeling a lot more confident.
In regards to the pain. It has yet to get better but she did say it would take a while.

Fingers crossed it all goes okay from here. I know it can take a while to heal but hopefully it won't get any bigger! I'm seeing my nurse again in 2 weeks.

Thanks so much for asking and for everyone's help!
X
