I just had a barium xray today for upper gi. i have crohns of the small and large intestine. the barium made me VERY sick and i'm very woozy now and cant sit up straight because my stomach hurts so bad. I've had bad D about 5 times since 10 am this morn. Still very dizzy. was able to eat some solid food today, but got sick right after. Are these side effects normal? How long do they last?

Did you get results from the x ray yet? I felt that way too, but they found a blockage in my x ray, which if it isn't cleared out, can be serious. May want to give a call to your dr if they are on call. Hope you feel better soon!
I am sorry you are sick from your test. I had that done in Feb while I was in the hospital and to tell you the truth I only drank 1/3 of the first cup of barium and threw up oh about four cups worth, How that happened I do not know.
The worst part for me? I felt like I had a bad chemical burn in my mouth and throat. Because I was on so much medication I do not think I would have felt much else.
I agree you should call your Dr and check the results. When I had my first UGI I had a stricture and ended up in the hosp that night . It hurt so much I couldnt even sit down anymore and my CD is in my small bowel.

Perhaps it would be worth calling the clinic where you had the x-ray for some advice?
I took the barium swallow with follow through, it was so fast it took 50 minutes. I'm vegan sensitive and I'm 5'5 10. When the radiologist saw my size they did not make me drink the whole thing. After I left the hospital within a few hours I had hives...it was okay I took three coffee enemas to get the barium out of my body, I also took bendryl with aspirin that is what the dr told me to do I did that twice within 15 hours. The next day we were driving, and I felt like I could not breathe, my heart began to race I felt my blood pressure go up and I started to sweat . I swear I felt like I was having a heart attack ...my wonderful husband took me to the ER well the dr and did not think it was barium but after I did research it is absolutely considered a toxic overdoes of barium . The next day I had swollen lymph nodes Barium is radioactive and I think I got too high of a dose for someone like me.
Anyhow NEVER EVER AGAIN. I was so scared to get in the first place.
