Hello,
I recently started a full time new job in retail. Long hours on my feet. A lot of walking around and kneeling, leaning while restocking, etc. just being very active. I've noticed the past couple of days I've been having pains. Starting to scare me because the last time I had these pains I ended up admitted into the hospital. I didn't even think this would ever cause a flare up but it seems to be. I wish I would have known before taking this job, which I love but worried I'm just too active for my condition. Anyone else experience this?

Andrea 3- yes I find a real difference between working a full day actively and rest and exercising. My job was landscaping- in the heat, lots of lifting, crouching, etc. Flares would take a lot longer to calm down after being in constant physical stress.
So now I'm looking for a new job after being on long service leave. For me there is a real difference between working all day and my newer regime of resting and popping down the gym for an hour or so.
Cheers- El Dako.

Hi,

I have worked in retail for the better part of 10 years. Over the past year working in a very busy environment such as retail most definitely had a negative impact on my health and then I finally got diagnosed with CD. Last few months, especially over Xmas my Crohns was at its worst and working the job I have absolutley destroyed me.

The agony and suffering I went through everyday was unbearable and it got to the point where I collapsed/black out and soiled myself, I woke up seconds later in fear and confusion and just left the store I worked in. Luckily know one was with me when it happened so know one knows what actually happened to me.

I've been off sick for about 5 weeks now which has been a big help and I'm hoping to get another job before I have to go back because I never ever want to work in retail/sales again.

its a possibilty, but the fact that you mention loving this job, it seems like it could be a good stress as well. If you are having a flare it could be also just be coincidential. I had my first flare while being a student and putting so much pressure on myself to excel, I was very stressed and not happy in fact. 2 years later, I ended up working in a field completly different from my field of study, a work which I adored but which was very demanding both physically and mentally...and I was in remission that whole time for years. so its hard to say... I'd consider the option to being open to your boss about your concerns and health. You may be able to find an arrangement to get more time to relax during your working days...good luck.

Thanks for the feedback. It is aggrevated by stress I have noticed. I love the interaction with people and helping them but it's still stressful at times like any job and physically stressful. being active and on my feet is when I notice it the worse. It's pain that I feel. I know this pain so well unforturnetly, put me in the hospital. I honestly don't do much walking around the mall anymore specifically because of my medical condition. I don't know what I was thinking. I was just so excited to get this position I just didn't stop to think it would be a problem.

Sometimes when I am more active I feel a flare starting. What I do now, when I'm more active I will go to bed a little earlier and get a bit more sleep. Seems to help.
