I just got my biopsy results back for my endoscopy. The two things noted were a gastric mucosal abnormality characterized by erythema in the lower third of my esophagus, and patchy mildly erythematous mucous (with no bleeding) in my gastric antrum. Both areas were biopsied and were apparently normal. If both were the result of crohn's would the biopsy have detected it? Are false negatives possible?

I had some inflammation in my esophagus and stomach which was biopsied (i know the stomach stuff was). I asked my doctor this same question, if it had been Crohn's inflammation if it would have been different under the microscope and he said yes.

Gastric crohn's under the microscope is very non specific and rarely has the characteristic granulomas.True Gastric crohn's (ulcers etc) is very uncommon- about 2-3% according to my consultant, but mild inflammation/gastritis is very common in those with crohn's and it usually responds well to the usual acid lowering drugs.
