Hey all,

Over the last few days, I've been having a lot of blood in my stool - to the point that I'm feeling dizzy and lightheaded. When this has happened in the past, my hemoglobin and iron dropped dangerously, so I just saw my doctor to get a blood test. I may need a blood transfusion or an iron transfusion to get me back to normal.

I get the results of the blood test tomorrow and will be able to start treatment, but I still don't know the cause of the bleeding. Have any of you had a similar issue? I don't know if it's Crohn's related or an ulcer or something else? I obviously need to stop the bleeding (which has slowly gotten better, but not completely), but I think replacing the blood is my doctor's top priority since my levels are dangerously low.

Please let me know if any of you have had a similar experience and what ended up happening. Thanks!

I'm in a similar situation. I've had on-again off-again rectal bleeding, and mine always seems to be due to internal hemorrhoids. I bled for a month straight back in March, and it's been happening sporadically ever since. I've also experienced the light-headedness and dizziness. My hemoglobin is okay but my iron and ferritin are both quite low (iron is at 30 and ferritin is at 4). As a result, I'm having iron infusions myself - my first infusion actually is today, in a few hours!

I agree that it's a good idea to have iron infusions or a blood transfusion so that you can get your iron and hemoglobin up out of the danger zone, but it is also important to know the cause of the bleeding. Is your bleeding bright red or darker/black? If it's bright red, then a sigmoidoscopy or possibly even an anuscopy could find the cause. If you'd like to be thorough, a colonoscopy is probably your best bet. Good luck, I hope you can get it figured out!

It has been dark. Good luck at your iron infusion today! I'm seeing a hematolgist and my GI doctor this week so hopefully we can figure out the source of the bleeding.

I had continual bleeding in1992. It was for three months. An abscess caused it. I hope you get answers soon. Let us know.
