Hi everyone I hope your all going well. Has anyone tried the carnivore diet? It's basically no carbs, only red fatty meat and water. I have chrons disease, iv had my large bowel and rectum removed. Iv been on numerous drugs which don't seem to help. After a week on carnivore all my pain went away! I'm 8 weeks in, all my bloating has gone, I'm still pain free. I have so much energy. It's not all sunshine and rainbows as I have lost a stone in weight but Iv become very lean and still weight train with no issues. I'm hopeful someone else is on this diet or has tried it??

I do a strict carnivore diet called PKD. I eat nothing but beef and beef liver right now. Have been doing carnivore for seven months in total and it put me in remission. Glad to hear you're doing well. It's helping lots and lots of people.

PKD basically starts out as strict carnivore until you get rid of all your symptoms and have good tests coming back then slowly reintroduces some vegetables and fruits but not all.

Sounds good, I'm glad it's working for you and helping for so many. I wish it was more widely known about. I told my specialist im doing carnivore and he wasn't impressed, but it's working for me so I'm sticking to it. I'm even going to stop my medication. I also have no plans to reintroduce fruits or veg but stay on carnivore for the rest of my days 💪

Iv had my bloods taken recently my inflammation markers where normal, that's normal for someone without chrons. Iv done alot of research and the only diet that seems to touch auto immune disease long term and short term is the carnivore diet. Iv tried many things and they haven't worked.

Yeah if you go to the your story section of the forum and then see my thread called I am now in remission, you'll see a lot of the pushback you get from doing this sort of diet.

My only advice would be to make sure you are including organ meats, you can become nutritionally deficient quite easily when doing restrictive diets like this unless you make sure you eat enough of everything. I personally have to eat 400g of beef liver every week to keep me topped up but there are any number of combinations you can do.

You want to make sure they're not too low (below 2) and not too high (above 5) as much as possible. It's easy to do once you get used to it but for months mine were all over the place.

After 6 months of doing this my bloods went back to normal and my calprotectin levels had dropped from 1500 to 600. Still a ways to go but massive improvements.

Unfortunately once chrons has taken hold you often can't just cut out individual items because the damage is done. You have to cut out everything, heal and then reintroduce things.
 
Mak sure you get your blood tests regularly to ensure your inflammation markers don't rise. Are you sure you should stop your medication though? What medications are you on at the moment?

Azathioprine and infliximabe. And I'm very sure, I feel like crap on them. Iv never felt so good on carnivore. Iv had my large bowel and rectum removed and have an ileostomy which has been good for me but this is next level.
 
I wonder whether it's about what people cut out that was bothering them rather than the fact of eating a lot of meat. My son, a vegetarian, had an enormous improvement in symptoms just by cutting out dairy and chocolate. It stopped his bloating and pain and he needed the bathroom much less. I think this is highly individual.
He's still interested in endoscopic healing on top of an improvement in symptoms.

The reason people feel great on carnivore is because it cuts out all of the potential triggers, is easy to digest, is highly nutritious and if managed correctly induces autophagy which is one of the body's major healing mechanisms.

Whole grain wheat, oats, barley, and nuts like cashews, almonds and sunflower seeds are pretty much your best sources of magnesium, which is critical to your body converting inactive vitamin d you make from sun exposure, into the active form which helps increase your absorption of calcium and magnesium ~40%. so that's why magnesium is so very important.

Since all those minerals are involved in blood pressure, your blood pressure might eventually rise, and can increase your risk of stroke or heart attack. Eat meat all you want, but I'd say limit red meat to 3 ounces a day.

Any temporary improvements you experienced might be explained by a damaged microbiomes reduced ability to processes fiber and carbohydrates, this is better addressed with a fodmap diet or specific carbohydrate diet or IBD-AID. If you are not familiar with the gi microbiome, its the recent acknowledgment of trillions of bacteria/microbes that naturally live in our intestine and are being linked to many health conditions and exposure to antibiotics and other unnatural chemicals could damage it.

You make a valid point, however red meat has been shown to contain all the nutrients needed for humans. The bioavailable nutrients in veg is far less than that of meat. I'm not saying don't eat veg etc but you can live a long healthy life on eating meat, there's plenty of studies to show this. There are also no proper studies done that show earing meat increases heart issues, infact there's studies that show the opposite. Also your body doesn't need fibre or carbs which sounds crazy but if ya do some deep diving the evidence can be found. At the end of the day I think its important to find what works for you as an individual 🙂 and if it works stick with it. I have no idea if it's going to help me long term but it's helping me and 1000s of other with chrons or other autoimmune diseases so why not give it a go.

I understand why you'd think this but it isn't true, I'd recommend doing some research on this if you are interested in the diet. There's plenty of studies showing that contrary to what was previously believed you don't need the same amount of vitamins and minerals to sustain carnivore, it doesn't affect your heart negatively and helps the gut microbiome.

You are absolutely right. Carnivore is completely sustainable and extremely healthy so long as you eat high quality grass fed muscle and organ meats.

It's just wether you have time to really look into it. Look up Dr Paul Mason, Dr chaffee or Dr berry. There's plenty of others but they are a good start.

Again, this is looking at the effect of red meat on a standard western diet, slowing down digestion. Yes slowing down the digestion of a western diet will make things difficult because there is so much rubbish in there. This is why fibre is promoted so much, something you don't actually need unless you are trying to help move crappy foods out of your system.

An all meat diet from highly nutritious sources is much better on the system.

I do it through a clinic called Paleomedicina, you can find them online. It starts out as strict meat only carnivore but over time they allow you to introduce certain other foods based on blood test results etc.
