Ok I have no idea if this should be posted somewhere else....

Anyways I am flaring and looking for some suggestions on cereals. This whole grain fad that the country is going through really drives me nuts since that means I cannot eat a lot of cereal and I am sick of eggs and toast every morning. Rice crispies are one of the few things I can eat and they get soggy sooooo fast.... Everything is whole grain or corn based and I have problems with those.... So anyways if anyone has suggestions on cheap cereal or even breakfast suggestions that are really fast that would be great. Thanks

I have never seen it. But then again for some reason oatmeal has always been questionable. Sometimes I handle it great other times not so great. I should try it again.. Thank you for the suggestion.

Try eating whatever you want whenever you want don't limit yourself to "breakfast" foods. I had some lamb, sweet potato, kale, and melon for breakfast this morning.

I like rice chex for cereal. It dissolves nicely. I don't limit my food choices to time of day and rarely eat chex at breakfast time. If I am able to eat in the morning its usually bread.

I was going to say chex as well. what about oat meal or hot rice cereal (Quaker makes one so do the farina people) also if looking for cold. savory rice pudding

that reminds me, I used to like apples and cinnamon cream of wheat, but I only find regular in the store now :(

oatmeal was sometimes a little too chunky on the way out.. thats why I don't really eat it anymore.

I go for coco pops or rice crispies, or porridge with some honey. Croissants and a slice of cheese and meat is also good. I've also been having a small cooked breakfast when I have the time

Instead of milk on cereals u could always use yogurt, should stop it going soggy so quickly

I have the same problem with Rice Krispies. I usually use a smaller bowl and just keep the box nearby. :) I don't like soggy. This is the same for Cocoa Krispies.

The other suggestion I had was Honey Smacks, but I see they are now puffed wheat. They used to be puffed rice, I thought?

Love that stuff, I use it alot, they honey one is sweet so I avoid it and smaller box :ytongue:

I also use large flaked oatmeal but use rice milk on it, regular milk bloats. Cheerios is good but has alots of sodium... Life cereal is one of my faves. Quinoa is good too but the flakes are better with cinnamon. Avoid wheat and corn based.

Hope this helps.

Anything made with rice seems to agree with me. Rice crispies is good and is low in fiber. Mostly, you just want to avoid the whole grain/fiber thing. I wish they made low fiber cheerios :(

Also, cream of rice is pretty good, as is cream of wheat. For some reason cream of wheat really gives me gas. If you cant tolerate milk, rice milk is a decent alternative as well as soy milk, but soy milk doesnt do well on my stomach either.

Be aware that some cereals are made with whole grain rice so just always look at the nutrition facts for whole grain and fiber content. I believe they also have a gluten free version of rice crispies as well!

Since cream of rice can be a it bland, I like to add a healthy dose of salt and sometimes cinnamon with butter. They also sell different flavors but they tend to be too strong for me.

I am having smoothies for breakfast. They are cheap, easy and quick to make. They are also nutritious and very filling. I have a different flavour every morning. Yesterday morning I used an apple and some water. This morning I used a ripe banana, a strawberry and some coconut water. I also make them using things like rice milk and almond milk but I prefer water and coconut water. Dairy hurts my UC, so I can’t use cows milk in them but a lot of people do. Sometimes I make veggie smoothies; I had a celery, cucumber and watermelon one last week.

I found this recipe online:

2 ripe bananas
8 strawberries
1 cup vanilla yoghurt
1 cup natural muesli
2 cups milk
2 cups ice
1 tbsp honey

Place all ingredients in a blender, cover and blend till smooth. Serves 4

Sadly I can’t consume yoghurt, muesli or milk, but someone here may find it useful.

In the first week of having them, I had looser bowel movements from all the additional fibre I was consuming every day, but this is apparently quite normal. It settled down after a week and I was able to increase my daily intake with no problems. I drink about a pint for breakfast now.

Smoothies sound pretty good. I have a magic bullet and it works nicely for smoothies.

One thing I absolutely LOVE are "Dianas Bananas". They are frozen, chocolate dipped bananas on a popsicle stick and they're great. They come in both dark and milk chocolate and I remove them from the stick and add them to smoothies. They are frozen so they make the smoothie nice and cold and also the chocolate coating blends in nicely to the shake. It adds so much flavor (I eat two per day just on the stick but be sure to REMOVE the stick if you blend LOL)

The dark chocolate versions are lactose free and I believe it might even be completely dairy free as well. They also sell a little kit at the grocery store where you can make them yourself. Basically the chocolate coating is similar to that chocolate hard shell you put on ice cream.

Anyway, ill stop rambling about bananas now. I think im obsessed with the stupid things. Two per day religiously for over a month = 60+ bananas = several boxes! Call me banana brain from now on I guess.

Best for breakfast

Avoid cereals. Grains are hard to digest - our weakened intestines don't have the enzymes to break down the starch molecules. Smoothies are the way to go for a quick and complete (and yummy!) meal. We always keep frozen fruits and berries in the freezer (and do some freezing when fruits are in season!). Things to put in smoothies:
Papaya
Fresh or frozen peaches
Mango
Banana
Fresh or frozen strawberries
Watermelon
Cantaloupe or honeydew melon
Carrot (if your blender is powerful enough to liquefy it), carrot juice otherwise
Yogurt (esp if homemade and allowed to ferment a whole 24 hours to get rid of the lactose)
Kefir
Ginger juice (ginger root liquefied in a blender with water and strained)
COCONUT MILK (heavenly and healing)
COCONUT OIL (unrefined - super yummy, healing and nutritious)
Coconut (shredded and UNSWEETENED)
NUTMEG! (good for diarrhea)

There is no single formula or proportions to follow, just have enough liquids to be able to blend (water is fine too) - variety is the spice of life! And health!

What NOT to put in your smoothies if you have Crohn's:
Milk (cow's - because of the lactose)
Ice cream (too much sugar and lactose)
Muesli or other cereal (too much starch)
Oats
Nuts (unless you're in remission)
Sugar, molasses, or maple syrup (too much sugar)
Wheat germ (no cereals):goodluck:

I make banana loaf, it's cheap and uses up over ripe bananas and it's so easy to make even I can do it!! If you can't eat bananas you can use other ingredients. I haven't got the recipe handy but I got it off the good food website so you can google it. Plain scones are also nice and filling with little fibre and occasionally I have coco pops.

If Rice Krispies get soggy too fast, try the Rice Krispy Treats Cereal. Since they're glabbed and coated together with sugar, they take longer to dissolve or get soggy. I've found that Cherrios are good with me, even though they have some wheat with them.

I avoid cereal for this same reason. All the yummy ones kill me :(

For breakfast, I usually try white crackers with peanut butter. Crackers aren't hard to digest, and the PB gets some protein/calories in there.

i love stewed apples with almond meal for brekky

Ya should of been here a month ago I have 5 apple trees but not many left. I make a no sugar applesauce, dont need sugar in it sweet apples. Had applecrisp too but no more don't wanna see another one. ;)

Hi mountaingem,
i wouldn't call it a recipe.....
A little water in a pot, add peeled and cored chopped apples (pink lady are sweetest but any apples are good)
Cover and simmer for 15- 20 min.
I make a big batch and put it in the fridge.

Add almond meal to a bowlful and mix.
NO sugar, but honey if you need sweetening

It looks and feels like baby food.

im the same i just eat toast for breakfast, its far from boring now, i started eating smoothies or i have a fruit salad type thing, but it doesnt really help me in the toilet department sometimes =( good luck hope you find something yummmmmmmmy

My breakfast has turned into quite the regular thing. I fry up egg whites Sun or Mon night. Enough for the entire week. Zip bag them individually, and it's a quick mic in the morning. That with a yogurt, maybe a small amount of fruit if I'm still hungry. Keeps me going from 7a until 1230p for lunch. I do the egg whites so I don't have to worry about cholesterol. Plus eggs are supposed to be the easiest animal protein to digest. Since my levels are always low, I'm trying to incorporate as many as I can.

Oh, and Yogurt Cherrios are always good for munching. :)

Dont forget about cinnamon toast. Buttered toast sprinkled with cinnamon and sugar = YUM.

My 3 year old loves this for her bedtime snack with camomille tea. Luckliy she is not opposed to 12 grain bread, so I dont feel so bad about the sugar. lol.
