Cipro and Achilles pain?

So I've been on cipro for about a week now and today I bruised my Achilles tendon/ heel. Now cipro has given me solid stools and gotten rid of most of my pain too. I'm feeling great crohn's-wise and now this crap! There's a dull ache when I put weight on my left leg now. Has anyone else experienced this and what should I do? I don't want to over react or anything. But at the same time, I don't want anything to get out of hand.

Just thought I'd update this. I continued to take the cipro for another day and had to stop from the pain it was causing in my legs. It's given me achilles pain, and weakness and numbness in my calves and feet. It's not gotten better after 2 days off of it.

Anyone know how long I should expect these side effects to be there? I'm so depressed because my Crohn's is finally under control, but I'm having these other symptoms now. Has anyone else experienced this?

You may be interested in this warning about the side effects of Ciprofloxacin.........................

WARNING: This medication may rarely cause tendon damage (e.g., tendonitis, tendon rupture) during or after treatment. Your risk for tendon problems is greater if you are over 60 years of age, if you are taking corticosteroids (such as prednisone), or if you have a kidney, heart or lung transplant. Stop exercising, rest, and seek immediate medical attention if you develop joint/muscle/tendon pain or swelling.

Thanks for the information, dusty. Hopefully all this clears up after a while. The tendon pain I think is a little better. It's the mostly the numbness and tingling that bothers me. My doc said I was low in potassium and sodium so it could be that I guess.

When I was researching Cipro a couple months ago, I recall the tendonitis side effect. It also said it could show up months later as well. I hope yours heals soon, I know it can be extremely painful. Make sure you inform you doc.

Were you also taking flagyl (a common combo for Crohnies)? Flagyl is known to cause the tingling/numbing effect. it generally goes away after a while when you stop the drug.

Cipro and Levaquin both have the black box warning about the tendonitis. There are class action suits against the mfrs because some patients have actually had ruptured tendons!

I had tendonitis from Levaquin and still struggle with it from time to time - two years later. I did a lot of research and found some articles that suggested this side effect was made worse when there is a magnesium deficiency present. I increased my mag intake, and also soaked in alot of epsom salt baths (thru which you can absorb magnesium transdermally) and it seemed to help.

Good luck! - Amy

Cookie, I've taken flagyl before don't really remember the side effects being tingling really. But man I got really anxious on it! I took it about a month ago.

Amy, thanks a lot for the tip! Now magnesium won't give me D or anything if I soak in the epsom salt right? Don't need that right now too :p
