I had a CT last week and they found thickening in rectosigmoid column. I am having severe pain in the rectum. They want to do a colonoscopy asap. I have had 2 in the past as well as surgeries. But I have been in remission for 10 years. Now I am so scared to go under anesthesia. Plus just thinking about the prep is painful with all that's going on down there! I know it could be a lot worse, but any words of wisdom or tips is so appreciated. Thanks!

Frozen girl thanks for the thread! I will try some of those tips. Is anyone else sacred to go under anesthesia? I know they say it's light but I'm still nervous:-(

My colonoscopy was the first time I was under anesthetic. I was apprehensive, but it all happened really fast. A nurse puts in an iv before you go in. The doctor injected the sedative, and I went out immediately. With my first colonoscopy, I woke up during the procedure, not in pain, and they gave me more anesthetic and I went right back to sleep. With the second one, I wasn't afraid at all.

If it is your sigmoid and rectum, how about asking for a sigmoidoscopy (is that what it is called?). That way the prep is only an enema rather than the whole laxative prep, and the scope is less intrusive. I don't know what the pain relief/anaesthetic is with this procedure though. Personally I have only ever had a full colonoscopy.

My last colonoscopy I was given a very light sedative and awake for the whole procedure. I think because it was a day clinic and they liked to get rid of the patients fast! It did mean I was up and running very quickly after the scope.

Good luck!

My last colonoscopy I was under Versed and Fentanyl, you remain awake and technically you are not under anesthesia. I prefer it to Propofol which is a more potent anesthetic.

Sigmoidoscopies are a breeze: They only go in about 18 inches, the tube is thinner and does not make all the colon turns that a colonoscopy does. Because of its short length it only diagnoses the rectum and sigmoid colon. The prep is only an enema.

Working in surgery, it can be very interesting when people come out of anesthesia. Talking is the least concerning. Some people are combative and it can be scary when some become super strong and want off the table NOW, and they aren't really awake. Personally, I hate coming out of anesthesia, but I would rather be knocked out than not.

The only tip I could give you is to make sure you are hydrated!!! I too had many scopes, some good and some bad! The worst was that my blood pressure was low cause of dehydration and they could not give me more meds till it came up! Which it did with the an I've push!!! These guys are professionals and don't want to see you in pain,, so no worries, and yes the prep is horrible!!! Blahhhh

I had an Upper GI and also a Flexible Sigmoidoscopy in the late 1990,s and I hated them because I was awake the whole time during both procedures. Who wants to be awake when a doctor is sticking something in their butt.....not me.

I had my first colonoscopy in 2006 and another one in 2009. I liked the doctor and the staff and the facility where the procedure was performed. I had Versed as a sedative and I was not awake at all. The PREP was horrible back then and I got so nauseous. Unfortunately the result of the 2006 procedure was Ulcerative Colitis.

I had a colonoscopy last year by a new doctor. I did not like him. I did not like his staff. The colonoscopy came back normal. The PREP was not so bad this time around. And I got Propofol as a sedative and I was not awake. I have never had any pain or anything after the procedure.

My sister has to have a colonoscopy soon and she is not looking forward to it. I don't know what her experience was the first time she had one a while back. As long as I am not awake I am okay with a colonoscopy or endoscopy. I am 54 years old and she 64 years old.
