Hi,
I am asking to be kept in your thoughts, since I have my (first) colonoscopy on Friday. I started today with some laxative pills and a low-fiber diet. Prep day is tomorrow with Miralax and stuff. I hope it goes okay and something treatable comes out of the scope.

Please also hav eyour fingers crossed that I will not have an episode of my mental health condition while at the scope. I have multiple personality disorder, and I fear a bit that a child alter will be triggered (I have some medical trauma in my history). Hope that with appropriate pain relief and sedation this won't happen.

You will definately be in my thoughts. The miralax prep was not too bad. At one point after drinking my six glasses and I still had not started going to the bathroom, I did feel like I was going to vomit. But I sipped on ginger ale and walked around. And I guess the walking helped my bowels move. Gross I know, sorry.
I was sedated but awake. Do you know if you will be completely knocked out? I was groggy and out of it for the rest of the day. I also have a mental illness, and worried how the medicine might affect me. (especially the day after) No problems that I noticed, except I feel a little depressed today. This happens to me whenever I get pain meds or sedation meds.
I will keep you in my thoughts and prayers. Good luck.

:hugs: Just make sure your GI knows about the MPD and is prepared in case the kid comes out. Will he continue the scope? Increase sedation? Stop the procedure? I'd make sure there's a plan in place. Good luck and I hope everything goes well.

Hi Astrid-

I just had my first colonoscopy on Monday and I was really REALLY nervous- but now I feel silly for getting worked up about it. I'm sure you've already heard it before (I heard it for weeks from my relatives), but the prep really is the worst part. I did the Miralax mixed with Gatorade and Dulcolax pills and it didn't take but maybe 2 hours for it to start working.

As far as the procedure itself, a nurse wheeled me into the exam room, the anesthesiologist chatted with me for about 15 minutes about football, and then he said "Okay, here we go!" and I watched him put the meds in my IV line (I was sedated with Propofol) and that was it. Next thing I knew I was being woken up- didn't remember a thing and didn't feel violated or traumatized like I expected I would. It really was like taking one of the nicest naps I've had in a long time. It sounds like your doctor has already told you about sedation for your procedure, so I'm confident that your experience will go just as smoothly as mine. My best advice is to try not to get too worked up over it (like I did) because it will be over before you know it and isn't at all worth the stress and the possibility of your child alter showing up.

A sidebar in reference to the MPD: Have you watched United States of Tara on Showtime? Is it at all an accurate depiction of MPD/DID?

I'll be thinking of you and sending positive vibes your way!

Lydia_Marsh, thanks for the reassurance. I will try to keep as calm as possible. I don't know what I will be sedated with, but the nurse will likely tell me or I'll ask when I go in for the scope.

As for US of Tara, I haven't seen it so I can't judge how accurate it is. It is based on an actual person however.

Did they tell you to get saline enemas as well?
I had to take 3 Dulcolax tablets at 7 pm the night before my scope, then 3 more at 6 a.m the day of my scope (scope wasn't until 3:30 p.m). I also had to drink 32 ounces of gatorade with a 238 g bottle of Miralax mixed in it the night before- this was 14x the daily dose of Miralax and it really worked well for me.
Hope you get some relief soon!!!

Thanks for the response.

Well the colonoscopy went all well. I was totally knocked out for the procedure - I guess they gave me too much sedation. The result is that all is fine. I likely have (chronic) constipation, which is good in that I wouldn't want to have IBD. However, I've been taking laxatives for years on and off (Miralax I think) with no to little effect. This will likely be one of my last forum posts, and I don't want to intrude upon a community for a disease I don't have.

Did they take biopsies? Because my colonoscopy endoscopic report said everything looked normal, but awaiting biopsy results. I was diagnosed back in 2005. But now they are unsure of my diagnosis. Long story. I was just curious if they took biopsies during your procedure. Glad that everything looks good! It does give peace of mind. :ysmile:
