I have my first scope tomorrow to find out what the heck is wrong with me. Will they be able to tell me right away if I have IBD? Any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Hi.

It is possible. But don't be shocked if the doctor waits for results.

It really depends on your doctor and what they can actually see. Some doctors will discuss immediate findings such as visible inflammation and ulcers, others won't discuss findings until they have the results of biopsies.

Hello DaKing,

in the 28 years I have had Crohn's I have had 10 Colonoscopies. Over the years the prep tastes better, but it is still tedious, but necessary. The chances are that the doctor wont be able to tell you the results because you wont be awake enough once you wake up from the meds they give you. My docs give me Versed and Demurral.

Crohns in particular can lurk in the small bowel which is very very long. Both scopes can only peek into either end so it's possible to have normal scopes both visually and via biopsy but still have IBD.

If you do have the above outcome there are other tests to look at the small bowel and getting normal scopes should not rule out IBD.

Some may tell you, some may not. Biopsies should be taken, and you won't know the results of these right away, maybe in a couple of weeks. The biopsies may detect inflammation not visible with just the scope, or reveal or confirm the type of visible inflammation.

Also, the sedatives used for the scope may mean you do not remember what is said to you even if they do tell you.

Well the procedure went good. They said things looked normal but took several samples for biopsies. They said I may have Barrett's Esophagus but will know more in a few weeks.

I guess by ibd they mean Crohn's, uc is easily diagnosed with colons copy, I am learning, but Crohn's Is harder to diagnose

UC and Crohn's are both IBD. IBD stands for inflammatory bowel disease. That includes microscopic colitis, ulcerative colitis (UC), Crohn's disease, and some others.

OK I didn't know I have learnt both uc and crohns are ibd also at least by the scope he can rule uc out but like other said with crohns it's harder to diagnose

My colonoscopy showed only mild inflamation but a CT scan made it clear.
