I've been wearing contacts for several years now, including several different brands. I'm in Air Optix (for astigmatism) by Ciba Vision now and have been for about 2 years. For the last 2 months or so, I'm suddenly developing blurry vision for about 30 minutes to an hour after I put them in. It will come and go, affecting both eyes independently. Some days it will improve and I can manage to wear the contacts all day. However, other days it will just keep happening and I have to switch to glasses in order to see. Has anyone else had this problem? I was diagnosed in June and have been on both Remicade and Aza since then if it happens to make a difference. I was also on the mini-pill for birth control for the last few years but had to quit in September due to liver metabolism. I've heard the hormones can affect eyes but doesn't seem to apply to my case...

Thanks for any input or suggestions!!

Hi, AKCrohns!

Have you switched your contacts out since this began?

I have had problems like this in the past, though not quite as bad as you describe. The blurriness would come and go at random, and often I would have to take the contacts out and rinse them with solution to get it to go away - then it would return again in a few minutes. Many times I would give up and just wear glasses.

For me, the problem resolved itself when I switched to a new contact solution. What kind are you using? I used Opti-Free Replenish before and now use Biotrue. I've had no problems at all since the switch.

You might want to try a few different brands and see what works. If it doesn't change anything, consider seeing your optometrist.

 I hope it stops soon!

I wore contacts for quite a few years with crohn's but never had this problem. I'd definitelly talk to your optometrist though. Haven't worn contacts in a few years

My eyes go blurry if they are dry. Maybe due to heat or dehydration I assume.

I have recently changed my contact lenses from a monthly, to a 2-weekly type and found these to feel much better on my eyes

Thanks for all the input. I'm due to see the eye dr next month but figured I'd ask around first. I figured it's probably non-Crohn's related but you never know! I always change my contacts to a new pair each month as my eyes get irritated and dry at the end of 4 weeks anyhow.

SarahBear, I too use Biotrue and haven't had any problems until now. But lately, I've just given up and switched to glasses more often than not. It's not worth the headache (literally!).

sorry to kind of hijack this thread, but my eyesight is pretty bad (im shortsighted) and have been wearing glasses for around 5 years for driving and watching tv.. I find if I wear them all the time, it sometimes makes me feel a bit dizzy reading/looking at things close up.. but im not sure if thats because I can still see around the outside of the glasses a bit?.. if that makes sense?

anyway, its now got to the stage that I am fed up of squinting all the time and not seeing anything so I thought I would give contacts a go, and I basically just want some advice about what to choose? monthly? daily? weekly?

and also, what are they like to live with on a day to day basis?

I should also add that I absolutley HATE eyedrops.. does it feel like them everytime you put them in? because if so, im out already! haha

I forget what brand I have, but I take them out every night and change them every month. I personally wouldn't go with a kind you leave in for longer - it seems like there's a higher risk of infection and such. Plus, I accidentally fell asleep with mine in once and woke up with ulcers on my eyes. :ack: But, it's personal preference and whatever your doctor suggests. :)

At first, putting them in and taking them out can be frustrating but if they're in right, you won't even feel them. If you do feel them, take them out, make sure they're not backwards, rinse them with solution, and put them back in. After you've done it for a few weeks or so, it's a breeze!

Eyedrops terrify me too. :p It doesn't feel like that at all to me. Depending on how much solution is on the lens when you put it on, it either won't feel any different at all, or it'll just feel like your eye is filling up with tears.

Thanks for the advice :)

Eye ulcers sound nasty! Now you've said that, I don't think ill ever forget to take them out! haha

I think the best thing for me to do, is book an appointment and try them out, see how I like it... I did practice touching my eyeball the other day and my phone rang and made me jump and poke myself in the eye... I won't be doing that again :p

If you can afford them, daily disposables are just great. I very rarely have any problems or issues with mine. Saying that, if you work in a heavily air-conditioned office or work at a computer most of the day (like me) - you really can't beat your glasses!

I work in an opticians and used to be an opticians manager so i can help out on this one....
Firstly you dont say if youve been on any kind of steroid since having the blurry vision? This can affect the eyes and will do up untill around 6 months after even taking any steroids.
Have you been to see an opthamologist at the hospital, they will check the back of the eye more thoroughly than your optician.
Air optix are not the best contacts for letting as much oxygen to your eye, so maybe talk through different brands with your optician to find one that is best sutied for you, they will be more expensive, but you only get one pair of eyes right!!

I suffer from random outbursts of Blury vision. It will start like a halo in one eye, and then overtime move over to the other one. I get my eyes checked at work when i have it, and no signs of problems, also the hospital are happy that they are doing ok.
Hope this helps :)

Nikki,
No I haven't ever been on any steroids so that isn't the problem. It's a random problem with no seeming rhyme or reason. I had my annual eye appointment and my eyes look good, no real change needed in my prescription. My dr doesn't know why I would be having the blurriness. I'm trialing a new pair as we speak to see if the weight placement needed to be adjusted.
You say air optix isn't a great choice? I've trialed quite a few pairs trying to find a brand that works while still giving a high oxygen level to my eye. What is your personal favorite? (I realize you are not a dr...just curious as to your opinion!) Thanks for any advice!
