Hi, I am new here and was curious if anyone has been diagnosed after having a complicated labor or pregnancy. 3 years ago I gave birth to my son. I was fine during the pregnancy until the last 8 weeks. After that I started noticing alot of swelling in face hands and feet. It continued and I started having pain so the next day I went to the obgyn she rushed me to the hospital. I had HELP syndrome which is attributed to preclamsia(which I never had) anyway HELP is extremly bad it makes your body unable to support the child and the mother. In my case Julian was born 6 weeks early but dev. he was 8 weeks early. He had not been recvc the nutrition he needed and my organs had started shutting down ( liver and kidney and blood pressure was sky high) so they needed to do emergency c section. Julian was in the NICU for 4 weeks I was in the ICU for 4 days and reg room for 3 days. It was very scary and I havent been the same since, but Julian is healthy thank God. Not long after that I started feeling fatigued, trouble sleeping, constipation. They checked thyroid etc. I was in the hospital a year later for testing but because I had a seizure. All tests came back normal After all that... nothing they said it was just PPD. Since then it got worse then they thought I had Lupus, then colitis now Crohns It is severe in entire colon and all through intestines and esophagus has minor damage. Anyway I was just wondering if maybe the trauma of the pregnancy triggered Crohns disease? Anyone else have anything like that happen? :ywow:

Well I can not be of much help but I can share with you my story. I have been having problems for the last year...since I had my son (my 2nd child). I had a very stressful pregnancy and was on bed rest the last half b/c pre-term issues, I had him 4 weeks early with a horrible labor. Since having him, i was very fatigue, trouble sleeping and constipation. Of course I just thought it was from caring of two young children and my body adjusting. Within a few months, bloody diarrhea, frequent bms, lower back pain, horrible headaches in my right eye, along with a few other lovely things.
I really do not know at this point I just had my GI apt Friday and he believes it is a form of IBD and has scheduled me for a colonoscopy Friday. He did tell me it is common for things to get better during pregnancy and it could have possibly masked the symptoms. I also shared with the GI my son had a pretty large head and wondered if it could have done any damage, and he said it is actually very possible.
Anyways wish I had more answers for you, me and so many others, but just know your not alone! (((HUGS)))

My mum had pre-eclampsia with my sister and was diagnosed with ulcerative colitis about 5 years later, maybe there is a link!

Thanks guys anything helps. I heard its genetic but I am not Jewish I dont smoke and no history so I can only guess maybe the trauma to the body triggered the disease that was dormant I dont know. Just trying to piece it together. Thanks!!

Hi social me and welcome! I haven't had children yet, so I don't have any firsthand experience. However, I have done a lot of research on how pregnancy affects women with Crohn's. I have read plenty of stories where women become diagnosed shortly after giving birth. Also, I have read about women who were already diagnosed flaring quite badly after having a child. Some suggest it is due to the hormones. Again, this is only what I have read online, so it may not be the most reliable information. However, it sure seems like pregnancy can have impact on Crohn's.

Have you been able to get your Crohn's under control? What medications are you taking?
