Has anyone else heard the theory that cravings for certain foods are a result of underlying deficiencies, that cravings are the body's way of telling you what nutrition it needs? Is there good evidence supporting this, or is it an undisputed fact in certain circumstances (e.g. in pregnant women)?

In some ways my body would be regarded as hopeless at telling me what it needs, as it tells me I don't need to eat sometimes even though my weight is dangerously low, and it tells me I need codeine when I've already had well over the recommended daily amounts. (Though I would argue that while my weight is low, my digestive system is right to tell me when it can't handle food, and I will feel better with codeine regardless of official dosage rules.)

I definitely get cravings, for all sorts of different things, and I'll eat them very often for a few weeks or months, and then I really don't want them at all anymore. But when I am craving something, I know exactly what I want: not just a food-type, but a specific food/drink, often a specific brand. Though there are other foods and drinks that I like on a much more long-term, usually less intense basis. My blood tests don't usually reveal any deficiencies.

Do you think cravings are more common in people with digestive disease or who are underweight? Do you get cravings, do they differ when you're flaring? Is there any link between the things you crave or are they random?

I have heard this. I somewhat believe it but not entirely. For example despite being anemic I almost never crave red meat, in fact it sounds unappealing totally. Now it is hard to digest so maybe I am saving myself. I suspect cravings are most common whether it is due to deficiencies it just we want to eat food that isn't as likely to hurt (white carbs etc) I tend to crave foods that are safe flare foods. White pasta is a big one. Kinda random when it happens though. Except I almost never crave anything in the morning. Likely a result of years of not eating breakfast though.

At the moment I'm craving oat cakes. It kind of makes sense because I haven't been able to touch high fibre food for so long, my new stoma has made lots of foods available for me now that I've not had for ages, but oat cakes are the only one I'm craving. :confused2:

I haven't actually researched this (just saw a lot of pins on Pinterest), but from the advice of my acupuncturist as well as my own experience, I've been beating my cravings with eating a lot more protein and cooked leafy greens and veggies. I make them mostly in soup - the crock pot has become my new best friend. I also get my "sugar fix" by eating some cooked fruits as dessert. It took a bit of time, but now I barely crave anything that may cause me problems. Only peanut butter (more protein!) but I figured that it's because it was my go-to food during my flare up last year. :p

I take the opposite approach and try to fulfil my cravings, except the really unhealthy ones (e.g. when I wanted raw fruit when I had a new stoma, then my body definitely did not want what it thought it wanted!).

Hehehe, I know what you mean. When I was first going with this approach, it was close to Halloween time, and I could not resist the chocolate in my house! And another time about a month and a half later, I struggled and ate so many grains like bagels with cream cheese and cookies....I can tell you at that point, it was so not worth it taste and feeling wise. It really sucks though when you are craving something healthy like raw fruit, and your body is saying, "Nope! Not going to happen."
