Hey all

Just had my second resection last Monday. It was open surgery, not lapro, but the incision is still quite small, maybe like 4 inches from the belly-button down. Ever since I came home (day before yesterday) I've been having crazy gas pain from trapped gas or something. I'm SUPER burpy and keep feeling like I need to have a huge fart (sorry) but I just can't push it out!!!! I'm trying to go for little walks when I have the energy. I haven't had much of an appetite and so haven't eaten too much since being home. They sent me home with dilaudid and because of the bad pain I had the past couple days I've been taking it every 4 hours as instructed. I'm concerned that it's the reason things aren't getting going so I'm trying to get by on just a lot of tylenol and xanax to keep from tensing up. I passed gas 4 times in hospital and moved my bowels 3 times before leaving, so I think I was good and ready? Did anyone else have this experience or have any insight? I'm a bit concerned and quite uncomfortable :(.

Thanks!

I think as long as you had bowel movements you are probably ok. Have you had one today? The truth is your system is out of wack right now and hopefully it's just rebooting. It wouldn't hurt to speak with the surgeon though just to be sure it's not a complication. Feel better and may you fart soon ;)

No BM yet today or yesterday (no gas yesterday either) but I just ripped off two THANK GOD :D. My whole family applauded :) it was after the dilaudid wore off so now I'm trying to think of other ways to manage the incision pains. Are lidocaine patches only available by prescription? They mentioned them to me at the hospital but I said I didn't think I needed them (because I'm an idiot). The pain I'm taking the dilaudid for feels more superficial than real bowel pain when it's not a gas issue. I also have ultram. Does this cause the same transit issues (in cases of experience)?

I'm glad you got some relief there. I'm not familiar with those drugs but hopefully someone else can offer insight. Have you tried an over the counter anti gas pill or is that what these drugs are supposed to do? Certainly talk to your doctor before adding anything.

I had that after my 3rd surgery. Taking GasX helpme alot. It will take a while for things to get to your new normal. We all have a new normal after a resection. You may have 5 or 10 BM's a day and you might have just one.

As long as you pass gas and have a BM you will be ok. If you get nausea and throw up you need to get ahold of your GI or surgeon right away.

Try to stay away from the pain meds. it will help with the BM's and you don't want to become addiched to them, I did and it was hard to come off them.

I hope things start to level out for you.
