Does Crohn's disease prevent building muscle? I'm skinny but I have like the minimal amount of muscle for the weights I use. I've seen people at the gym who I can lift more than but they're a lot bigger than me. Same exercise, same form, but different weights. I eat healthy and try to get a lot of protein in and I work out 4-5 days a week but I can't gain any bulk. I'm not looking to be a body builder but I just want to gain a little weight. I'm 6'0" and 155 pounds.

You might try cutting back on how much you are attending the gym. Greater recovery time might be of benefit.

I gained the most when I began lifting twice a week. There are different ways of lifting. Some friends and family members will do isolation muscle building, going to the gym 5 times a week, and do well with that. For me, because of my condition I found working out full body twice a week produced best results.

Something of interesting too, there was recently a study article on the benefits of lifting twice a week:

Crohn's disease can prevent proper absorption of vitamins and minerals which can certainly make it difficult to gain weight or be physically fit.

It really depends on the extent and location of your disease. Have you been scoped or imaged recently? Have you had blood tests to ensure major vitamins and minerals are in their proper level?

The other thing is if your running with diarrhea you are definitely suffering from malabsorption and electrolyte loss which will make it harder to work out.

I'd recommend you read this article about nutrition in CD http://www.medscape.com/viewarticle/450317_2

Thanks for the replies. I do isolation workouts so each day is a different set of muscles. And as far as my intake of vitamins go, I get blood tests when I go in for Remicade and as far as I know, everything seems to be normal.
