I recently found out I'm pregnant with #3.

This will be my first pregnancy with Crohns.

My question is does Crohns make you a "high risk" pregnancy? I've seen some articles online about it. Will I be seen more because of it? I'm just curious. I have my first appt soon and will definitely ask about it.

Any other information you can provide about Crohns and pregnancy would be appreciated too! Thanks!

Congratulations on your pregnancy.

I think if you are in remission and stay in remission Crohn's doesn't automatically make you high risk. You might need to change some of your medications, however.

I am about two weeks away from giving birth to my second child. I didn't know I had Crohn's with my first, and was in a flare. This pregnancy, I was in remission, and they talked about having me seen at 20 weeks to a high risk doctor, but that later became unnecessary. I think as long as you stay in in remission, you should have a fairly uneventful pregnancy :) Congratulations!

I think if you are in remission, you will stay in remission. I felt my best when I was pregnant. It was like Crohn's disappeared. Maybe that is why I had three kids.

Congrats and GL!

Thanks you all. My ob said it was up to me to switch to a high risk dr. I stayed with her And everything was going great. Saw and heard heartbeat at 6 weeks. Went back last week and the baby no longer had a heartbeat :( I wonder if the Crohns had anything to do with it. We are going to get testing done.

I am sorry there is no longer a heartbeat. If it makes you feel better, it probably has nothing to do with the Crohn's. I hope your doctor can give you answers. I lost a pregnancy at 10 weeks, and my doctor told me it was so common for anyone to lose a pregnancy during the first trimester, Crohn's or not.

I had 3 successful and healthy pregnancies, all with Crohns. I felt better than ever while pregnant honestly, though I did get my first kidney stone at 7 months pregnant with my 3rd. I am now finding though that Crohns can cause early menopause as I am 38 and just diagnosed last week. Fsh hormone levels were 99.8 and menopause range is 23-116. I guess I say this because I wasn't aware of this side effect and am thankful that I was finished having babies before I found out. keep this in mind as you're planning your family. I'm just now researching this so not sure how common it is. Best of luck with your pregnancy! You should be fine! As I stated, I had the best remissions ever while pregnant!

I feel like an idiot. I just saw your update. I am so sorry for your loss. I doubt it was Crohns related as well. You are in my thoughts and prayers.

That's okay. Thanks for the responses and that is interesting to know about the possible early menopause. We are going to try again in the Fall.

Hey pan, just stumbled upon your post. So sorry--I bet Crohn's had not much to do with this episode. My OB said, if you become preg in remission, obviously odds are in your favor. 1/3 get better preg, 1/3 stay the same, and 1/3 might flare during pregnancy is what I have been told. I was a bit scared when I was preg with my now almost 10 year old son, but he came out just fine. I actually think I had Crohn's with my oldest son, but was not diagnosed, just had weird things going on with my body like erythema nodosum nodules, etc. I had a little "mishap" like the one you just described prior to my youngest son---my OB stated that I was not to think it was Crohn's related or to blame myself for doing anything that I thought was wrong. It's tough, but you will overcome. Sending lots of well-wishes your way and hoping that you can be at peace. Snap

First of all, I am sorry for your loss. I also doubt it was because of crohns.

To answer your question, I worked in an OB office when I was pregnant the first time. Any women with underlying medical issue like autoimmune diseases, diabetes, etc. are all considered "high risk" pregnancies. This is a definition and the purpose is to label women who might have to be watched more closely. That doesn't mean that you will have complications, it is just that the doctor might not want to overlook symptoms like constipation, abdominal pains, or whatever that might be "normal" in other women but not in your case.

Have all of you had natural births or had to have c-sections? I am deathly afraid of having a natural birth, being my crohn's is in my lower intestine. I am afraid of creating a abscess or even worse. I am wondering if i ask to have a C-Section, they will let me have one. We aren't pregnant yet, but are starting to trying. I am just trying to get all of the information that i can.
