Recently I learned that Sugar is potentially one of the worst substances for the Crohn's body because it strips us of good bacteria, especially Corn syrup etc...

I just wanted to get peoples thoughts on this. I have drastically cut out unneccessary Sugar from my diet (havent had any candy in 8 days, have had very little Soda) and I think I can tell a positive difference in terms of bloating and pain.

What are your thoughts?? -harry

LOL @ Poppysocks, (almost called you poopysocks lol..0

Sugar feeds the bacteria and I avoid sugar and use Stevia, you get used to it. Soda's cause bloating and even low cal has the wrong stuff in it. I rarely drink soda, if
I do, it is gingerale. For the most part I do feel somewhat a tad better, but bloat happens even if I dont have sugar.

I have Crohn's and used to eat tons of sugar-filled food items everyday... WAY more than most people. My mother-in-law was worried about all the sugar I ate and was convinced it was bad for my stomach. I read an article the other day that kind of scared me, and have cut down my sugar intake ever since.

I can't remember where the article was from so I can't share it with you, but the main part that caught my attention was the fact that it doesn't necessarily cause you pain right after you eat it (candy and sweets are the one food I can eat without having any pain). But it affects the lining of your intestines and over time will cause damage. Sorry I'm not much help, but there is lots of research on the subject.

Unfourtunatley, I am eating alot of biscuits right now because I can only tolerate those, bnread, crackers and crisps.

I've decided the fact I can/am eating outweighs the bad nature of the food!

Hi Daniel,

Just reading your comment there i too mostly only eat sweets and crisps and belive it or not i dont get any pain i drink cans and cans or Redbull (full of sugar) most people think that im quite mad and are putting myself in pain, but i really dont get any pain from these foods. Its the normal foods that cause me pain, thats mad im going to look into that now.

Stargirrrrl,

I agree with you when i am eating i dont really care what type of food it is once it stays down i will eat it. And if thats a load of junk food then that is what i will have.

Good luck with all your Crohns issues, I just had my remicade like 6 days ago so thats good. And dont be to hard on yourselves about eating the sugar, i think as long as we eat a reasonable amount we should be fine. -harry

I dont eat a lot of sugar at all (get through 2ltrs of coke every 2-3mnths) Dont add sugar to anything either.

I do notice if I drink coke that my stomach feel upset 1 can is normally ok, but if im drinking a few vodka and cokes it gets me (vodka on its own is fine). Find grapes kill me as well, im guessing that down to the sugar

I normally have a pack of crisps every day, and since not eating them for the last 3days i do feel a bit of a difference. Also keeping off caffine has improved things

I never had a sweet tooth really until the start of this year when I became ill. Not really sure why but do feel that my body was craving "energy" food be that good or bad. Now I make chocolate chip cookies every week and 1 a day gets me through a bit. I used to be a big fruit eater but can only tolerate bananas now so that might be why I've moved tothe sweet stuff ;)

I miss sugar! I miss candy and soda and yes Apples!

Sugar is surprisingly hard to digest. It cause extra acid, so any GERD or heartburn issues it makes worse and then it's also bad for the bowels. It's not just crohn's if that makes you feel any better. When you have D sugar needs to be limited in general.

It's funny how many things i realize now are so sweet and have so much sugar in them. I am actually truly sad and angry that I cant eat fruit anymore.

Fruit!

I also am pissed that I cant eat alot of fruit and vegetables. I feel like when I am not having a flareup it is easier to eat those foods. My doctor always tells me that there is no Crohns diet, and that I can eat what I want as long as it doesnt bother me. However, in my opinion, alot of foods, like fruits, do indeed bother me! frustrating! I try to tell myself that it is somehow an advantage for me to not be able to consume so much sugar, basically I tell myself that this way I will be healthier overall and potentially be at less risk for diabetes if I dont eat so much sugar. Its nice to give yourself indirect benefits when something is directly frustrating oneself -harry

My doc keep saying the same thing and it drives me crazy. He's professionally deals with this he should have so ideas, or at least keep food from making me cry.

I try to use sweeteners as much as possible instead of sugar.
Sugar is hard to digest; it causes bacteria overgrow and gas.
SCDiet really helps me.

I stay away from all sugar, my stomach hates me otherwise. I don't do sodas, candy, anything with corn syrup etc. It was hard at first bc I am so young and love the junk food but its certainly better off this way!

sugar

This is so interesting because i have just realised something. I was dangerously underweight and used biscuits to add calories to my otherwise (fairly) normal diet.
I gradually became bored with the biscuits and now that i have gained a bit of weight i rarely eat them. Over the past couple of weeks i have eaten maybe one a day as opposed to one packet a day. Anyway i had been taking 5 loperomide tabs a day which was quite effective in controlling diorreah (wrong spelling). But i have recently had to reduce the dose as i was becoming constipated. Now that i think about it, there may have been a connection between the sugar and the D! Has anyone else experienced this?
