Hello everybody

I had an ileal resection 5 weeks ago, I didn’t have terrible crohns issues but the surgeon agreed to do the procedure on my request. He agreed that I had a very good chance of benefitting from the op.

Anyway, the surgery went very well and I was home within days. Recover has been a lot harder than I ever thought I’m a 34 year old fit male but blimey; it has been tough to get the energy levels back. Took a while to get the bowels to work proper again but they are getting there too.

The reason I am posting is that I have had quite bad bloating and bad tiredness over the past 2 days. Of course the natural worry is that the dreaded Crohns has returned already. It has been my first full week back at work and my little 3 year old boy has been getting up at the crack of dawn the past few days so I am hoping it’s just down to that.

I have had my follow up letter from the hospital, November!!! Slightly more than the 4-6 weeks they said. Should I be more worried? Should/can I ask for any tests to ease my mind?

Thanks for your advice

the disease itself will never go away, i think were all waiting for that magic potion! probably just your body getting used to "normal" again. i had the surgery 15 yrs ago at the time they thought i had UC and the surgery was supossed to cure me but after the reconnect i had many problems and they renamed it crohns! the bloating again could be from your body still getting used to itself again, have you been eating anything different? i kept a notebook of everything i ate after my reconnect and it helped A LOT, if i was bloated or had belly ache anything i could go back and see if there was a pattern and then emilinate that from my diet. the tiredness could very well be you just pushing yourself. i think we are all guilty of that at times! even though we dont feel good we have to for whatever reason (mine being children as well!) you should keep up on blood tests as well and are you on any meds now? it wouldnt hurt to go back and see your dr, whatever you decide i wish you the best of luck!

Once I had the surgery, sleep was very important. I also found that if I didn't get at least 6 good hours of sleep, my body was off. The lack of sleep could very well be simulating what you think is the Crohns, which by the way never goes away.

Thanks for the replies

Yes of course I know there is very good chance it will be active again. I am jsu hoping longer than 5 weeks!!! lolz

I know 5 weeks is still not long after surgery and I think I have probably been too keen to get back in to the swing of things. I am also hoping that the bloating pain is just my guts settling down.
I think I will call my GI nurse and see if I can get a blood test. How much can they tell by a blood test alone?

Also I have starting eating Weatibix Cereal for breakfast over the past couple of days? Maybe the roughage is something to do with it?

I HIGHLY recommend oatmeal for breakfast. I have eaten about 10,000 bowls of it, we are best friends. Anytime I have flare ups, I eat oatmeal. Helps your cholesterol count as well

So its been six weeks since my surgery.

I am still getting D very similiar to what I was getting before my surgery. Is this normal?

I am told it can take months/ if not years for everything to settle back down to normal (ish). Is that correct? Ar emy expections to high after 6 weeks?

sorry that your still not feeling too good after your surgery, it took months for me to feel any benefit from my two resection ops... the body just needs a little extra time to heal....

Hope you feel a bit better soon..

I am 4 weeks past surgery myself and I have all of the same issues, by all means contact your doctor but I just had my first 3 week follow up with the surgeon and he said I am on track and all of this is normal. Each person is different but I am even still on light pain killers and have nausea which I have never had before. This surgery did a real number on me and my entire body is recuperating still. I have read for hours what to expect and like others suggest it could be awhile before you start feeling normal again. What medications are you on? I take a PPI which helps with the bloating. I went back to work this week and I wish I would have waited another week but it's actually kind of nice to get back to the normal routine. Good luck hope all goes well.

I am 4 months post op, and it has only really been in the last month that I feel "normal" again, including bowels movements, which are still hit and miss for constancy to be honest.

Your are not alone, I experienced everything you have as well. I still flare up a fair bit, but then all we have had done, is the diseased part of our intestines has been removed, the disease itself will never vanish so you will still get those symptoms I'm afraid.

Good luck, keep positive and live life to the fullest.

Well I had my blood test back and all are perfectly normal!!

I am guessing that is good news.
