Hello Everyone!

I recently spoke with my Gi doctor who told me that there is a new blood test to diagnose definitively whether a patient has Crohn's Disease or not by recognizing anitbodies that the body produces in response to the disease. He said he is pretty confident that I have Crohn's disease from my colonoscopy but he would like to be 100 percent sure and I know I would. I was wondering if anyone out there has had this test done (it is done through Prometheus Labs and I believe the one he is talking about is the IBD Serology 7 test). This test is pretty expensive depending on which one he is talking about ($400 to over $600) and my insurance may not cover it. He is leaving the decision up to me any help?

If it is the Serology 7 test, then I wouldn't say that it gives a definitive answer. It is actually quite unreliable- sensitivity is about 75% meaning 25% of patients with IBD will have a false negative, specificity is about 90% meaning 10% of positive results are false positives. (at least that's my understanding of it).

Of course if it isn't the serology 7 test then none of that applies anyway!

I took the Prometheus lab test thingy! I got to take it for free as part of a study! And the best part... I got a $100 for participation. I didn't get paid anything for the 11 month Ustekinumab study.

EDIT: Because it was part of the study, I didn't get to see the results of my test. It wouldn't have told me anything I didn't already now, though.:)

I had that test done and it was negative. However, there's no question that I have crohns. The test was done while I was in remission so I'm not sure if that makes a difference.

I had it done in combo with all the other tests - colonoscopy, pillcam, stool, regular blood tests. The way my doc explained it, each test led him to look closer at the next one. No one test would have definitively diagnosed me, but they all fit together like a puzzle. Mine came back absolutely positive, but I was also in an active flare.

I was tested for this a couple of years ago after already had been diagnosed for about 8 years. My test came back negative, which is crazy b/c I was currently in the hospital with a terrible flare. Crazy..

Well that helps. My son just got his results back for Prometheus Serology 7, Negative, but his colonoscopy showed severe bleeding in the terminal ileum and chronic colitis. The Doc wont say crohns or IBD but when entocort didn't work and we can't wean him off prednisone lower than 30mg, he wants to try Remicade. I was unsure of taking the risk if he actally didn't have crohns? But now I know it is unreliable...

We were never told about it, they must not use it at the childrens hospital that we go to. He did try to force a NEW VERY RELIABLE C DIFF test on us though. He had stage fright, no sample, and this nurse knew it was not diffy!!

I had what appeared to be a false positive with IBD 7 test. No evidence of Crohn's anywhere. Even my GI said it is considered voodoo science by a lot of docs. ??? Then why'd he order it??

I meet with my GI today, 1st visit. He ordered this test and a colonoscopy. He said the test is VERY HELPFUL and FAIRLY accurate ...it can show the likeness that you have or have not based off antibodies. That is all I know but hoping to find out Friday when I get my colonoscopy if it was positive or negative...I am not in a flare or what I like to call an episode!
