My son was recently diagnosed with Crohn's and I have a question. Can the use of long term pain killers cause Crohn's. My son has been on pain killers for a back problem for several years. He was just diagnosed with Crohn's last week. Does anyone know if this can happen?

Hi there, welcome to the forum! :bigwave: in answer to your question, no, I highly doubt that. Most onsets come from bacteria related illness, we have heard of Acutane, lack of Vitamin D, hereditary, but never heard of pain killers being a reason. Alot of people get back pain from Crohns. Could you tell us his age, your country , does he bleed ? Where is his crohns? How did it start? Sorry but this can help us help you. We are not doctors but we can share our experiences with you. Welcome aboard!

*Crohn's Spouse*

Hi,

I am an internal medicine doc and spouse of a Crohn's survivor. I have never heard of opioids being linked to Crohn's. That said, opioids do have the side effect of causing constipation. Crohn's is an autoimmune disease...basically the person's immune system attacks bowel resulting in inflammation and pain.

My Son

My son Chris is 29 years of age and it started back about 2 1/2 years ago. He was suffering with stomach pains and vommiting. Every episode ends up at the ER. The first episode was terrible. He had about a cup of blood pumped off of his stomach. He was admitted. They never found anything wrong with him. He was sent home. This process has taken place for a little more than 2 years. Every test I can think of was ran and nothing. His episodes were once every month or so. Now, it's monthly or sometimes bi-weekly. Chris is a thin young man and weighed about 140 to 106 lbs. Last Wednesday he weighed 102 lbs. He had the third colonoscopy perfomed Monday was a week ago and it showed pollops and they took a sample. Confirmed!

Hi K and welcome!

Has your son only been taking pain killers this whole time to deal with his symptoms???

Many people show no positive test results for years, which is why it can take forever to get a dx. Even clean colonoscopies and upper gis, though they still have symptoms. So, glad that Chris finally has a dx.

What are the next steps?

My son

At this point the doctor wants to try medication and a special diet. Maybe that will take care of things, I hope. I guess time will tell the story. Thanks so much for all of your help and giving thoughts about this matter. God bless everyone.
