I'm new to this forum - my son was recently diagnosed with crohns - and I'm trying to sort out the different forums I have found.

I am impressed with this forum and am wondering what the differences are between this forum and another big forum I have found called crohnszone.

Are the topics that are discussed different, are the users different, is there a different orientation?

Thanks.

Hey dad_01 Sorry to hear about your son's dx. I worry that one or both of my sons will be dx'd with it too. Think that would be harder to deal with than my own dx. as for what the differences are, that's pretty much a personal call to make. I've been on both, but find/found that this one holds a certain... I don't know what you'd call it.. a personal touch.. Anyway, neither is exclusive. you'll just have to make the decision as to which you frequent more often for yourself.. but either way, think you'll find a wealth of support, advice... and the nicest group of people on the internet ever, OK?

I have been on that one before but for some reason forgot the name so I just came here instead. I like everyone here and I think all forums are about the same. Everyones nice and very supportive.

Welcome to the forum

I used to go onto that site but then everyone started to get uptight so I just left. They have a lot of information but some of the people are not too nice.

Hi

I'm sorry about your son's diagnosis.

I recently found the forum on Healing Well's website and have learned a few things browsing the posts. Here's the direct link:

http://www.healingwell.com/community/default.aspx?f=17&p=5&x=25&ord=ld

Good luck!

I took a quick peak at healingwell; looks like a good general site for health info; i saw they had a crohn's section; I think i read that the founder has crohns.

Thanks!

Editorial Policy

I posted the same question on crohnszone - asking about their site and how they might be different or the same as this crohnsforum site.

I was very surprised that my posting had been edited - the monitor deleted my mention of crohnsforum, saying that "advertising" other sites was not permitted.

From what I've read on their site, there are some very interesting postings, from people who are trying to be very helpful. But if their editorial policy prohibits even mentioning the name of another crohns' site then I wonder what else they might be editing. It strikes me as more concern about protecting their turf than in enabling the free exchange of information for a community of users who have a very serious, potentially life threatening disease.

Some forums are very possessive about their members. Maybe partially due to advertising dollars they get based on hits. I was on a forum, of a different topic, and a number of members were actually banned for talking about going to another forum in private messages. Somebody turned them in. That's a little too controlling for me.

One thing I especially like about this forum is that it's a VBulletin format. Whatever topic I'm interested in, I always look for VBulletin forums because I like the layout and posting methods. At HealingWell, the topics are not broken down into categories so you have all these posts jumbled together with maybe the first page all current posts on different subjects. Like that, you have to scroll through maybe 2-3 pages to see other recent posts if you're looking for something that interests you. But I have read some good posts there, it's usually just to tedious to post and maintain a discussion.

Thanks to Mikeyarmo, Nancylee, and the others who make this forum possible!

According to their web site, they are privately funded by their founder and also through member contributions - I didn't see advertising dollars mentioned.

I'm disappointed because I saw some interesting postings from people but I'm not going to participate in a forum that has such a heavy-handed editorial policy. It' s interesting, but maybe not surprising, that they have a cutesy sort of graphical format but a heavy-handed posting policy.

By contrast, this forum doesnt' seem to focus on the cosmetics of the site but, rather, has a much more constructive editorial policy.

I think I found the forum where I'll be spending a lot of time.

By the way, what is the background on this forum? Who started it, who adminsters it, etc.?

Thanks for your welcome! I'm glad to be here. I can't imagine what it would be like trying to get information, and not having a shared community, without the internet and forums such as this.

I thought they took the poop theme a bit far.

Perhaps he's too modest to step forward... or more likely too busy. but I believe the credit lies with Mr Mike Yarmo... altho i'm willing to bet he shares the credit with our lovely super moderator nancy lee for all of the assistance she's been since early on.

I frequently post at HW mainly because it's one of the very first boards I found and there is alot of action on that board...I don't know anything about peter, the owner of HW having crohns himself, I've never heard that but that board is large because it deals with more then just IBD, it has forums for ALL chronic illnesses like prostate cancer, diabetes, chronic pain and even depression.

I enjoy this place as well, I like most places that are well monitored, you get alot of nuts on the less monitored boards.

:)
