Anyone that cant handle fruit or vegtables even when you are not flaring and even if it is solid or liquid. Send me right to the bathroom within 1 or 2 hours. Really sucks besides ensure cant have fruits or vegtables. I get so sick gas, lose stools, etc. Does this happen to anyone please email [email protected] Tricia

Hi Tricia.. Not sure what you're asking. But, for example, I'm not allowed fresh fruit or veggies with very few exceptions. Exceptions.. I can tolerate small amt's of applesauce made w/o sugar. I can have some, over ripe (mush) bananas. As for veggies.. no raw veggies, no green veggies, no veggies with peels, skins, pits or seeds. Overly cooked (boiled to mush, then pureed in food processor) veggies like parsnips, carrots, yellow beans, those I can take on a very limited basis. Like, I can tolerate yellow bell peppars if skinned and then cooked till they are really soft... but if I tried it with green bell peppars, it kills me. I think the gas they cause does more than just pump stool out of the GI tract. Think the pressure from gas makes the GI tract decide to evacuate, so it results in more spontaneous trips to the bathroom. That is strictly a laymans 'gut' instinct... Just a wild assed guess as to why my body reacts that way, OK

I'm quite lucky. Foods don't really affect my Crohn's all that much. Except apples. Is it something do do with plant fibre?

I could be wrong here, but it's probably the acid in it that's causing the problems...anything fruit or vegetable--whole or pureed--makes me cramp. But I LOVE smoothies (as long as there's no seeds or skins) and veggie drinks!

When i was in hospital with my big problem. when i first got crohn's the doctor had a go at the food lady for giving me a pint og orange juice. saying the acid in it can cause problems. So i think acids might be something to watch out for. however I have had no problems with eating fruit. have you tried banana. is an ace source of none roughage fibre. and it is neither a fruit nor a vegtable it is infact a herb.
This useless fact was brought to you by QI.

I searched and found an orange juice that has added calcium but is lactose free (yeah, lactose AKA milk sugar, gets added to orange juice too). Anyway, no probs with it.. Then one time I grabbed a bottle that has pulp in it.. my original is pulp free. Drank a glass... OMIGOD! What that pulp put me thru. Beat me to a pulp!

[email protected]en to a pulp! :)

Hi Tricia..
While in hospital and being diagnosed a nutritionist came in and helped me
with a diet plan and I've stuck to it ever since.

No raw veggies, or cooked veggies that produce gas.
I am only allowed apple juice-in the juice department.

My veggies such as carrots, beets, green beans are always well cooked.

It appears bananas are the only fruit I can handle well.
Oh and peeled grapes! Yes peeled green grapes. LOL.
I tried watermelon in the summer
and I guess it added too much water to my system
and it flew through me. :eek2:

I only eat well cooked veggies (carrots, zuchinis, pumpkin, asparagus, green beans and spinach mainly), and avoid all raw and gassy vegetables as they cause me so much pain.

As for fruits I mostly eat ripe bananas and avocados, as well as peeled ripe pears, peaches, melons, and sometimes papaya.

For juices I usually can tolerate pineapple and grape juice.

Hi Everyone

I went and had allergfy testings done and the doc that did the test said to me that you can only have rice milk gluten free diet fruit and veges with no skins pips on them no sugar. he said he dealt with crohns disease people and 90% of the people had the same allergys as I did this was not a hoax as i seem him 6 years ago and have been extremely well every since.

also i meant to say that no preservatives allowed either so no packet foods you have to make them from scratch and boy was that hard at the beginning but now its easy everything is hard at the beginning but it soon comes right.

crohns4. Thanks for the info. I look forward to reading the details of your doctors studies when he/she submits them to a scientific journal for a full peer review. It will take the info out of the anecdotal category and place it under the light of other professionals in the field who can review the claims and methodology used. I expect when these methods are replicated, and the results compared, his/her practices will be more widely accepted & used.

Hi crohns4. when you say rice milk, does this mean you are not allowed to eat any dairy, including yoghurt, or only milk? Also is your doctor an MD or a holistic doctor? What type of allergy tests did you have? I'm very interested in this......

I try to eat a lot of bananas and cantaloupe. watermelon is good when I need to "get going" but I have a problem with it and can stop.
once ate an entire watermelon in one sitting.
was it worth it? yes.

Here is my 2 cents on the matter of Fruit and Veg.
I have tried various ways to prepare F&V, with most not having a consistant result. (We all know that means a trip to the bathroom 20 minutes after you eat! ;-())

The one way that has consistantly allowed me to eat F&V is pressure cooking. The Nutritionist at the hospitol told me about it and it works well. I even make home made beans in the pressure cooker and it causes no gas problems!

Exactly which vegetables are classified as "gassy vegetables"?

I can't eat raw carrots, bell peppers (raw or cooked), raw apples, tomato skins, artichoke hearts, cabbage, kiwis, strawberries, raspberries/blackberries, or too much leafy green vegetables at once.

I have had a thought about fruits and veggies. At first I could not tolerate fruits or veggies as well but my mom kept cooking veggies for me and because I like fruits so much I just kept buying fruits. After a while I was able to eat fruits and veggies with no problem. So what I think is that bad bacteria in our intestines is attacking the good bacteria from fruits and veggies giving us pains and sending us to the bathroom so my idea is that you try to eat a lot of them and see what happens after a week or two. It would be just like taking a probiotic in that you get sick for a while at first but after a while you start to feel better and it helps you. I don't know what you guys thin about this. Tell me my idea is wrong or not I am just stating something that happened to me. Ask your doctor if you want to do this as well and you may want to have a week vacation or something.

I do not automatically rule out any hypothesis. It would make an interesting study.

I hope you are looking into chemistry or science degree of some kind. You really seem to have the interest needed to do well in it.

I'm thinking health science but after I am thinking about becoming a chiropractor. I am going to talk to someone though about what I should do.

Asparagus, broccoli, cabbage, cauliflower, most legumes (note how many of those are family related). I think there's some others, but those are the biggest.

One way I use green peppers when I can't tolerate the pieces but really want the flavor in my food is to roast them and then peel them and run through the blender so that they are pureed. Then I just stir 'em into whatever I'm making. Actually, one year I just pureed all my veggies up into my pasta sauce. Durn good flavor and didn't need a bit of salt. Truthfully, I bout always roast and peel my peppers. Makes 'em a little easier to digest and I love the flavor.

I eat pineapple only on pizza. (Papa Johns extra cheese and pineapple) which oddly enough doesn't bother me what-so-ever. I can eat an entire large pizza (over about an hour 1/2) and it doesn't bother my tummy at all.
but if I eat pineapple by itself, it sorta gives me mini-cramps.
nothing too bad, it's tolerable, but I should still stay away from it as much as possible.
unfortunately, after speaking about it now, I'm ordering a large Papa Johns pizza w/extra cheese and pineapple for dinner.
you see what you people do? shenanigans is what this place is full of..

Yeah, I can tolerate pineapple pieces on my homemade pizza after its broiled for 8 minutes... But when I try to add pineapple as a topping to my yogurt, or my rare piece of angel food cake, all hell breaks loose. now, I can skin, cook and eat my choice of yellow, red, or orange bell peppers... A-OK.. But if I try that with 'green', forgetaboutit. One last thing... pre illness, onions and I were A-OK. Onion salt or powder would kill me.. Anyway, onions and I no longer have a good relationship. Shame, since onions are purportedly a 'pre biotic'.. To get the taste, I cut a fresh onion ring, rub it across the food I'm broiling or grilling, and cook those items with the onion ring in place. Once the cooking is over, I turf the onion. gives me the flavour without the dire consequences

I've been having a hard time figuring out which vegetables don't get along with me.

It's not a constant; one day I could eat any veggie I want and it wouldn't bother me in the least. Another day it might make me feel like crap.

The last few months I've been avoiding a lot of vegetables. I went to a restaurant where I had no idea what the things on the menu were. So I ordered one that had chicken in the name. I was surprised when they came out with a mountain of vegetables. A lot of them were vegetables that have bothered me in the past. Since I had to pay for it I thought I'd eat it anyway. I was expecting to feel pretty bad but it actually ended up being the first day I didn't have any D in weeks!

onions are a 50/50 with me, sometimes they are fine, others I get heartburn and a porcelain throne for the evening.

I think we all have marginal days, when the least little transgression will set us off
Then robust ones, when we can push it just a little. My experience has this disease not being one of plateaus... at least not long ones. Very gradual declines or long slow uphill battles, the occasional pit fall of terror, or the drug induced holiday. Never a dull moment.
