A friends daughter who has Crohn's has just been diagnosed with MS. I was just wondering how common is this. How many people with Crohn's now have other diseases?

Having one autoimmune disease does increase the risk of getting another one. I guess if your immune system is mistakenly attacking one organ, it could just as easily attack something else. I can't think of anyone with Crohn's and MS off the top of my head, but there are people here with fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue syndrome, thyroid problems, arthritis and so on.

I did a quick google and found this:

Neurologic Factors. Inflammatory bowel disease has been associated with neurologic complications, including a higher risk for dementia, movement disorder, and stroke. People with IBD have a higher risk for developing multiple sclerosis and inflammation of the optic nerve (optic neuritis

Actually, I came across lot of conditions associated with UC/IBD whilst looking for that, that i was previously unaware of:eek2:

Thanks for the info, not sure if it was what I wanted to hear though. This disease is alot tougher than most people know.

hi... I'm Molly's mom and thanks Tannersmom:) I did read they can be associated but that the Humira and Remicade can also cause MS as well. We go to neuro tomorrow! Praying for something better than what we are hearing.

Hi Tannersmom

I was diagnosed with MS when I was 20 and Crohn's ten years ago when I was 33. They're both autoimmune diseases, but sometimes, the treatment of one can get in the way of the treatment of the other. On the other hand, some of the supplements work quite well in concert together.

Neither of my two illnesses are in remission, but my Crohn's has been the more dominant in the last three years. I do live in moments of concern/stress of both of them being in a bad flare simultaneously.
