If you've read any of my previous posts, You might be asking why I'm so hot for probiotics - well as I read many of the postings here I see problems that I feel might be helped, not necessarily cured, by consuming them and my last effort to communicate the benefits failed. So here's the back story that prompted my enthusiasm, then you can decide for yourself if they would help your situation.

After a perforated bowel, 2 resections and active Crohn's, flatulance had always been a problem, on the level of diarrhea, difficult but manageable. For either, I would excuse myself, go to the washroom and relieve the problem. Then suddenly out of the blue for no obvious reason flatulence amped up to grotesque levels. It was very painful both physically and socially.

By early afternoon each day the flatulence episodes would begin and last into the night. The only bright spot was my rapid transit syndrome (food passes through my system, depending, anywhere between 2 and 8 hours). Once the food was gone the flatulence would subside. I could make matters worse by eating the "wrong" foods but I couldn't make things better by eating the "right" foods. My GI and GP had no solutions to offer (I was already on heavy doses of steriods - Aristocort) and the only way to manage that I found was not eating until 2 or 3 in the afternoon. The cycle continued but it began in the evening not the afternoon. This went on for 2 to 3 years.

My wife (saint and my constant support that she is) and I were constantly thrashing about looking for some solution or another to the problem. I had tried yogurt but had a milk issue and it just made things worse. We had read about probiotics but at that time they were not readily available even in capsule form. Then one day my wife returned from grocery shopping with some yogurt drinks that contained a wide spectrum of probiotic, it had lower fat content and less dairy than plain yogurt. By then, I was willing to try almost anything. I had one of the drinks with dinner, then 2 drinks the next day, one with breakfast another with dinner - the flatulence and the associated abdominal cramping disappeared within days. I continue to take probiotics even now - sometimes as yogurt drinks and others as capsules depending what else is going on Crohn's wise.

The rest of the Crohn's symptoms were and are still there but I would say, I became then and am now in flatulence remission. That is to say my flatulence levels are normal - average - like every non-Crohn's body else's.

One side note: I still use selective fasting to reduce symptoms (mostly diarrhea), if I have a medical appointment or the like, I don't eat until I'm home once it's over.

That's it I won't mention probiotics again.

Hi there, I live in Brampton and I am curious what the brand name of these Yogurt drinks is. I've had enough with my most recent flare up and need to make some serious diet changes to figure out what makes things worse. Maybe this would be a good place to start with a food that could help symptoms.

Thanks for any help,

Chris.

Hi Chris

My wife seems to buy the brand that is on sale in any given week it gives me a variety of probiotics through time. If I'm having problems as I some times do with milk products I take a capsule - right now its Natural Factors Acidophilus & Bificus.

Hope this helps.
