After being dx with Crohn's and having sx I began having irregular periods and wasn't seeming to ovulate. This month I went to have this checked out as we are trying to get pregnant and it turns out that I now have PCOS (polycystic ovarian syndrome). My fertility doctor wants me to start metformin ER 750 twice daily. I am nervous about this as I've read this is really hard on people with GI issues. I was wonder if anyone had experience with either metformin or PCOS as a crohn's patient. ??? I am also under weight (5'4', 110lbs) which I've read that metformin will only help overweight people. I try to do a GF diet, but am not total GF.

Dec 2012- confirmed Crohn's and fistula sx
Humira injections twice a month

I tried metformin for diabetes but had stomach issues. There is a drug called glumetza that is like metformin but is slow release and doesn't bother the stomach so maybe ask your dr. About it.

My daughter, who is away at college, started Metformin about a week ago for PCOS, and also to help her LOSE weight. She called me after a few days to tell me that she has had this weird tingling in her hands, and also some gas that causes chest pain on and off. Her doctor told us that at the beginning she should expect a lot of gas- but it would decrease after a week or two. I hope the tingling goes away- she is a violin performance major.

I hope that your side effects are not bad, and that the metformin helps!

I do not specifically have Crohn's, but I do have PCOS and have been on Metformin. I was on 1000 mg. The first month or so was ROUGH. I could not eat a meal without having diarrhea. And not a little.......like pure liquid and forceful. (Sorry, TMI). After about 6 weeks is did slow down, but I eventually went off of it because my insulin resistance went away and I have had normal blood tests since then.

My husband on the other hand was on Metformin ER and had the opposite problem with constipation and he had no prior digestive issues. He was always very regular.

Just be careful the first week or so about traveling and not being close to a bathroom. Because if you have my experience, you do not have much time to find a bathroom once the medicine kicks in or after you eat.
