Hi there,
Having been diagnosed with Crohn's in June, it is a comfort to me that others are out there going through similar situations to me. I am currently on 10mg Prednisolone, having reduced the amount last time round, but had the amount raised when I saw my consultant a couple of weeks ago. I am due to start on Azathioprine next week and am worried as have been told the side effects can be very severe. Any information would be gratefully received.
Gotta go, as in UK it is 1.00am.

xx

Welcome. I'm not familiar with Azathioprine so don't have any information there but there are probably some here who are. And you'll find a lot of other good support and info here from many going through similar situations.

Hope this drug helps you. I'm sure you know a lot about what different diets/foods to experiment with/stay away from but since you were just diagnosed in June you may not. You might browse through the "Treatment" and "Food and Diet" threads. There's a lot to be learned but the disease does effect everyone differently so what helps for one person may not help for the rest.

Azathioprine is generic name for Imuran. This drug may be very helpful but it also has some side effects. The most important thing when you're on it, is to have regular blood tests to monitor CBC, liver and kidney activity. When I was on it, it caused me liver toxicity which luckily appeared in the blood tests before it's too late, and when the doctor lowered my dose, my liver enzymes went back to normal....

Also as it is an immunosuppressant, you should be very careful not to get infected and stay away from sick people. Also wash your hands always and be careful when eating outside. also if you need to take any vaccinations, always talk to your doctor first.

Hope this helps......

Welcome to the forum. I too take Imuran. I haven't had many side effects from it. I have noticed more joint inflammation lately. Hope you're feeling well, considering and once again...WELCOME! :)

A quick update!!! I saw my GI consultant yesterday, and he wants me to have another abdo ultrasound tomorrow, and depending on the results, to go on to have an investigative laparoscopy, which is not great, but I suppose these investigations have to be done. As he won't do any more re medication until he is 100% sure (as he is only 90% at the moment), that I do have Crohn's. I just hope that a definitive answer is found, one way or the other!!!!!

Hi and welcome to the forum!

I was wondering what tests the doctor used to diagnose your Crohn's?

Did he/she do a colonoscopy? That usually includes a biopsy and should confirm Crohn's.

Just wondering as investigative laparoscopy would be the last route to take..
I would think anyway.

Stay in touch and let us know how you fair.

Welcoming healing hugs~Nancy
