Hi Andy, here is what helps me....
I like using a hot pad set to warm, a cup of very warm (not hot) water to sip in a thermal cup (stays just at the right temperature longer) and reclining in my favorite comfy couch with a big warm blanket. The cats usually join me and they soothe me just by purring. Basically, anything to become calm, remain calm.
Then, if nothing gets better after about 20-30 minutes, I'll take some Bentylol (not sure what it's called in your neck of the woods) it's a smooth muscle relaxant. It'll make me a bit sleepy too, but that ususlly does the trick at that point.
