My GI recommended I go dairy free. I love cheese and yogurt but do not drink milk.

If I take Lactaid, does that mean I can still enjoy cheese and yogurt will trying to maintain a dairy free diet?

Sorry if this is a stupid question.

Thanks in advance for helping me out

My kid plays with this one often. Sometimes she can take 5-6 pills and then can have pizza. Other times lactaid does nothing. If your doc said you can try it go for it. Just don't be discouraged if you can't enjoy it like you want. My opinion is it isn't worth it. The pills get expensive so save it for that really special occasion

My oldest is lactose intolerant ( no Ibd).
Lactaid only works sometimes .
That said there are ALOT of non dairy options for cheese and yogurt ( soy, almond , coconut etc...).
He likes these better than the real thing with lactaid.

Either way you need your Gi to clarify for you .

Thanks for the info....I guess the next question for me is:

Does taking something like lactaid and eating dairy mean I am not dairy free? Is there something else in dairy that exacerbates crohns?

Sometimes the issue isn't lactose. Some dairy, like cheese, can lead to bulking of stools that can be unwanted for some of us. As others have said, it may be worth clarification.

Did your GI test you for a diary intolerance?

No, I was tested 6 ways from Sunday for corhn's and colitis just for him to tell me I have narrowing of the ilieum...then he suggested to continue on my Celiac diet and omit dairy....so whatever that all means is a mystery to me.

I discontinued dairy and wheat/grains/legumes. It made a huge difference.
My advise (for what it's worth):: Try going true dairy free for a month, then if you feel like you can't live without, try reintroducing one item at a time and see if symptoms get worse.

I have also gone Gluten Free & Cow Dairy Free since January 2014. My last D flare was in the fall 2013 & lasted several weeks..I haven't had a D flare since January 2014. It may be coincidence or it may be the Gluten Free & Cow Dairy Free efforts. Almond Milk & Goat Yogurt have been my 2014 go to milk & yogurt choices. I also switched out coffee for green tea so I wouldn't be tempted to use creamer in my coffee : )

I tried a completely dairy and lactose free diet and it didn't help at all. You can be tested for lactose intolerance, so I'm a bit surprised your doctor didn't do that before suggesting you change your diet. Did you have a proper test for coeliac?

I think if you want to know if avoiding dairy helps, you should avoid it completely for a couple of weeks. If you notice significant improvement, you can experiment with Lactaid and with seeing what you can tolerate later.
