My son is going through a very rough time. i am not sure to take him to emergency or what to do. He is on predisone-40mg a day but he is in the washroom all night and day. He has diarrhea and blood in his stool.he is not improving. I am afraid I will go to the hospital and they will send me home with no help. We are still waiting for remicade approval.Does anybody have any ideas, suggestions. he was on Modulen for 6 weeks and still started these symptoms. He was been diagnosed with Crohn's 3 monthes ago.

Thanks, Brenda

I only go to the ER if there's an immediate problem they can fix. Not typical Crohn's symptoms. I'd go for extreme pain (that I can't medicate under control), possible dehydration, possible bleeding too much to the point of needing transfusion, etc. I don't think the ER can do much about constant diarrhea and blood in the stool. :( I hope the Remi approval comes through soon for you.

I'm so sorry you and your son are going through such a tough time! :( Before heading off to emergency, have you tried called the GI's office to get their thoughts on the amount of blood loss, etc.? How long has he been on pred? Did the GI give you any idea as to when to 'expect' some improvement?

I agree with Stephanie in that emergency may not be able to do much to treat the immediate symptoms, however, if you are worried about the amount of blood loss or if he begins to generally feel worse or different from how he has been feeling (fevers, dehydration, increased weakness/fatigue, etc.) I would probably go to emergency. If only to be reassured that he is okay... :ghug:

Poor thing. How long has he been on Prednisone? I would go ahead and give his GI a ring and update them as to what is going on and see what they say. I don't think the ER would be as much help as his own doc at this point but certainly if he gets worse (dehydrated etc) I would bring him just to have him checked out, get fluids if need be etc.

Good Luck!

Hi
We had similar issue last week all day and all night..Doc increased pred fr 40-60mg daily temporarily. It helped and now he is going a lot less. Not the best but at least he feels a little better for a little time.

Sheryl, how old is your child? my GI is on vacation but David is supposed to go on a class trip Mon and tues. i would love for him to be able to go. i also would like for him to get some sleep .

Hi
My son is 11.. He was to pitch in the playoffs for his. Baseball team last Saturday! It's all I thought about all last week. It took 3 days to work and he still isn't fine...but much better.
Now he started 6 mp today and is throwing up!

Wow Sheryl,
sounds like my story. I hate seeing them go through this.

My insurance company is taking their sweet time approving the Remicade. They keep saying they did not receive our paper work.

I just want to see David feeling better.

The ER can run tests and may be able to help point you in the direction of a GI that has someone handle their practice when they go on vacation (most specialists do).

Bleeding is not a good thing nor is it normal nor should you wait until you're gushing to where you even need a transfusion. The ER isn't just for people with a lost limb but for those who are not able to see their regular doctor and NEED to see one NOW. Going to the ER also provides you with much needed fluids since he's more than likely dehydrated and can help you get treatment sooner from your GI (or help get to a new GI).

My mom took me to the ER whenever I was bleeding and each time I wound up having to stay in the hospital.

Hi Ms. Pickle,
If you think his symptoms are worsening then definitely take him into the Er. If they are the same I would call his doctors office and discuss with them. Sometimes getting some IV fluids in the hospital can really help was well as some pain medicine.

Didn't know his doc was away. Do they have someone cover for them while away? Doesn't seem right that they would leave their patients uncovered for a week. If so, go ahead and bring him in to the ER and see if they can give him some relief or point you to another doc.

Hi Brenda,

How is your boy doing? Have things settled any?

You have been given fab advice. :) The other thing to consider if you take him to the ER since your GI away is that 1. Even if nothing is done as such you will have peace of mind knowing he has been checked over and 2. You can ask them what sort of things you should look out for that they think would necessitate him being brought back in.

Good luck hun...

Hi and welcome.
I was just wondering if any things changed?
I hope he gets better soon.

I want to thank everyone for their advice. Those of you who said to take David to the hospital really helped me. Children's Hospital emergency is amazing. He was found to be dehydrated and had an infection. In hospital his temperature rose to 103. They put him on antibiotics and on Saturday he had his first treatment of Remicade. He is doing great...color in his face and only having bowel movements 3-4 times a day.....not 12 every night. he has had sleep and feels so much better. They also changed his diagnosis ...to Crohn's and colitis mixed with more colitis then crohns'. he was discharged from hospital today after a 4 day stay and will finish his recovery at home.

Thanks again and will keep you posted on his progress

Thanks for the update Ms.Pickle. :)

It is so fab to hear that David is feeling much better! Long may it continue! :panda:

Yay!!! I am so glad he is feeling better. I know how hard it is sometimes to make that decision whether or not to go to the ER. I am glad you went and they were able to help him.
