If I ate something at night that I shouldn't, is it possible that when the 'tricky' food came through my digestive system slowed down to try to avoid damage. But then was forced to process it in the morning when I ate breakfast. Can that happen do you think?

i'm not sure that's how it works, but depending on how late you ate it and how hard it was to digest may have something to do with. the body slows down bowel movement and digestion while you are sleeping.

For me, if I eat something bad one day, it always affects me the following day. So if I ate something fried or spicy today, I might feel a little sick today but I wouldn't get d or feel awful until the following morning. So I think it kind of depends on your body and how fast you digest things, but it certainly can be that way.

Depending on what it was it may have stayed in your stomach longer, or like vonfunk said the gi tract mostly shuts down at night. So, it is possible.

I hope you feel better!

Generally speaking, if I eat something greasy or spicy, I have mild d the next day. But if I eat something I really shouldn't like salad, I can be doubled over in pain in half an hour or so. I used to have ulcers in my small bowel, so I figure the pain is if something rubbed the ulcers, and the d is probably from bile not being absorbed. But I was wondering because there was one day when I felt ill straight after eating my breakfast, the only different thing I had was passionfruit juice, however the night before I had eaten some actual passionfruit.
