I have been on Delzicol 400MG (formerly Asacol) for 15 years. My new insurance carrier won't cover the Delzicol, so my doctor prescribed Pentasa 500mg. I am nervous about transitioning to a new medication after all this time. What choice do I have? I can't afford the Delzicol out-of-pocket. Has anyone transitioned between these two meds? Hoping to get some reassurance and/or feedback. Thank you!

Hi there Suz, I actually made an account right now because of your post. I am literally in the same boat as you, Delzicol (formerly Asacol) for the passed 16 years and it has always treated me well with very little to no side effects. As of February (4 days ago), my insurance no longer covers Delzicol but they cover Pentasa. I also am a bit worried to make such a major change to a medicine that has been controlling my Crohns for the passed 16 years.

I am hoping that by replying to your post we can bring attention to this concern of ours and maybe someone who made the switch can chime in with some positive news!

Thank you for your reply. Have you started taking your Pentasa? I just took my first dose about 15 minutes ago. I am very nervous. My doctor is confident I will be fine with the transition, but I am not so confident. We shall see. I definitely am interested if anyone else has encountered this situation.

I just found this post. I too am in the same boat, I have been on sufasalzine, asacol, for about 16 years. Delzacol for the past 4 years pretty happily and now my insurance will not pay for it. My Dr. called in a scrip for Pentasa and I was wondering how it was working for you? I think it has been a while since this was posted. Any input would be appreciated. Thank you
