Hello, I am Guatemalan female, 46 years old and was just diagnosed abroad, because I couldn't been diagnosed at my country.
I have been diagnosed in May, but only after July hospitalization in my country they started to give me steroids, after being diagnosed with all kinds of diseases.
First I had been swimming until September 2009, but I had to stop it after a pulmonary infection and the diarrhea began simultaneously.
They (doctors) began to think that it was all on head and that I might be eating something that was making me sick. They also thought I had diabetes, and that the medicines where making me go to the bathroom all the time. I also was hospitalized due to Rota virus and adenovirus both.
After begging to my Dr. to send me abroad, because I wasn't feeling well with what they were giving me, that it is when I discovered that I was with chrons disease.
The steroids have taken a toll on me. I still need information, because there not much information of these disease in my country.
Thank you again for this forum, I am glad I found it.

Hi capturetwist and :welcome:

I'm glad you have found us too! Wow that is hard having to go to another country to be diagnosed, mind you diagnosis can be difficult no matter where you are. Where were you diagnosed?, you will find loads of info and support here but you might also like to look up or join the Crohns and Colitis association in the country you went you, I am assuming you don't have one in Guatemala.

Where is your Crohns located and are you taking any other medications besides steroids?

Sorry about all the questions! Please stay around and ask as many questions as you want. Keep us posted on how you are going, good luck and welcome aboard!

Take care, :)
Dusty

Welcome Capturetwist!! I guess there's such a low incidence of crohns in Guatemala that the docs don't even consider it!! It's good that you realized they were misdiagnosing you! Are you still on steroids?? You need extra calcium while on the steroids!! Good luck!!

Hey Capturetwist...Welcome
I'm glad you found your way here. Sounds like your journey towards diagnosis was a bumpy one. That can happen no matter what country your in. Now that you know what your dealing with, you can find a wealth of information on the 'net. This place is great. You get an idea of how this condition affects individuals, most doctors only have knowledge of the medical side of things. Some doctors aren't even good at elaborating on that part of it either. Browse the individual threads, you may get some of your questions answered and feel free to offer any guidance you may have as well. You are no longer alone. Although we all are affected differently with Crohn's, collectively we are able to empathize with each other. No topic is off limits here. Don't be afraid to ask anything. Hope you stick around. Look forward to seeing you around.
