Hi,

I have CD and had my first surgery 3 months ago where all of the active disease has been removed. I've started seeing a dietitian who says I don't have to follow a strict diet anymore. I'd been following a strict diet to help my active CD for 12 years and am unsure about having such an open diet.

Have other people had surgery and eaten a wider range of foods?

Slowly work them into your system. I wouldn't just start gorging on all that you have been abstaining from. But I was definitely able to eat way more than I could.

Considering the length of time you were on a special diet, if you stopped drinking milk or eating gluten those will be hard (but not impossible) to work back into your diet. Both require specific enzymes to digest, and having gone without eating them for a long time your body will have stopped producing them, as such those foods are required to be worked in very slowly and will cause issues while your body learns to digest the again.

Hi,

I had my 4th surgery back in January and am almost back to a "normal" diet.
I'm eating fruit and veg, although am sticking to slightly easier to digest ones (not too much salad or raw veg). I've been having oatcakes as snacks, which I was recommended by my dietitian, with cashew or peanut butter, as well as the odd carrot stick and hummus.
I've also had lentils, which really agreed with me surprisingly.

I'm still wary of too much dried fruit or whole nuts, and am still sticking to white bread, pasta, rice etc, but personally I'm loving being able to eat again!! (I had a Stoma after my first surgery so had to be careful with food, and then other complications after my 2nd and 3rd, so this is a long time coming!!)

Just introduce things slowly, if they don't agree with you take them out of your diet again. Maybe go along the elimination diet route, it's worked for me in the past. Good luck, it's exciting!!

Thanks for the replies! I had nuts the other day for a snack which was a huge treat as I've been avoiding them for a good decade and now I crave them every day! I'll watch my portion size so that I don't over do it.

Thanks for the advice/sharing experiences. I feel a bit better now knowing other people went back to a regular diet.
