I'm new to having a stoma and ileostomy after an emergency total colectomy 8 weeks ago. The dietician at the hospital wasn't that helpful, told me a few things I should avoid 'while things settle down' such as peas, sweet corn, mushrooms, and that I should add salt to my food as I won't absorb so much (blood tests showed low levels of salt and potassium)

So, to those of you who have lived with one of these for awhile, my question is this - what do you eat? How have you changed your diet since having a stoma? Any idea of how to get in a bit more salt without having to inflict it on the rest of your family? (I will be cooking for my husband, 4 year old and 20 month pld as soon as I get my strength back!)
Any ideas gratefully received!

I've got a food gallery on my site which can give you an idea of what I eat, but I don't really avoid much.

For salt, if you want to spare the rest of your family from the sodium simply sprinkle it to your meals after it's served. You can also drink something like V8 to increase both potassium and sodium. Be sure to have your electrolytes monitored through blood and urine tests to make sure that you're staying on track.

Hey. I've had mine for a long time. After things settled my diet was fairly normal. Raw veggies are an issue along with apples with skin on. As Vegan ostomy said V8 is good. I make sure I eat a banana a day. Blood work is important to check for deficiencies in vitamins, minerals and dehydration. (you are more susceptible to these things).
I take B12 injections because my terminal ileum is gone. It is the only place B12 is absorbed.

would sublingual b12 work for you too? A pill or spray under the tongue gets b12 to your blood stream without hitting the intestine.

I don't know. They've always said I need shots. Mine can get very low for some reason. I spent a year on monthly shots and went to every other month in February. I'll look into it.
