Do I keep him home?

My son was diagnosed with Crohn's in October. He had c-diff in February and we think he may have it again (stool specimen went to lab yesterday afternoon). Do I keep him home until I find out for sure - or until he's on Flagyl (or something else) due to the possibility of him having a bowel movement at school? Thanks!!

Personally I would keep him home. C-diff is extrememly contagious and can be spread around, especially if he were to use the toliet at school. He should be kept home until he is free of the C-diff in my opinion. How did he contract the c-diff? I hope he gets better soon.

Thanks! That was my thought, but my husband thinks I'm overreacting. Actually we aren't sure where he contracted it (the first time or this time). Since his last infusion, he's been a different kid (3/7)...he's been out biking, running, riding the scooter - everything then suddenly over the weekend had blood in the toilet. It's frustrating because he was feeling SOOOO good and now his stomach bothers him here and there - not constant but enough to be noticeable.

Was he on antibitoics before he got it the first time or in a hospital? Those are the usual culprits for getting C-diff. Do you have him taking probitoics? It is very important that he be taking probitoics to help get the good bacteria back into his gut. There are several one out there he could take, you can find them at most health food stores. Also if you have not already heard of it, there is a probitoic called florastor which is a type of yeast that helps get rid of C-diff. I am sorry your son is dealing with this, it is always hard to see your kids sick. I hope he gets better soon..

So probiotics like yogurt or an actual pill? Health food store or GNC? No, we don't have him on probiotics, but it's worth a try.

We're not really sure where he contracted the c-diff...the only thing that is the link between the Feb c-diff and this time is a library book. Yes, a library book. He borrowed one during the end of Jan to the beginning of Feb and then suddenly we found out he had cdiff. We just borrowed another book last week and no lie - within a few days he was starting to feel crummy again.

The only time we've been back in the hospital (since his initial visits) has been for his infusions (and now I'm a freak when we go in and start to reclean everything with the saniwipes).

I'll have to stop at a health food store and look into the probiotics. We'll try anything at this point!! Thanks for the info!

I am not sure where you are from, I live in Chicago IL and there is a whole foods over here and they sell different probiotics in pill form. They are usually refridgerated and I would get one that contains multiple strains. They have ones that only have acidophilis, but with C-diff he needs more than just the ones strain. Also, if your son can tolerate dairy, I know some with crohns cannot eat dairy, but some grocery stores like Jewel have this drink called Kefir, it is made by lifeway, it is a probitoic drink ( kind of like a yogurt drink) and they have many flavors. They are 99% lactose free. If he does tolerate dairy, this is good too. As far as the florastor, here I buy it at walgreens. Not sure of you have a walgreen where you are, but maybe you could check out some of the other drug stores where you are at.

Wow, how frustrating what you guys are going through. Oh, also you stated you were bringing the saniwipes to the hospital where he has his infusions, the only thing is that will kill C-diff is bleach. The others like lysol and hand sanitizer do not work. I am sorry he is dealing with all this. Does he have a bad case? What do the doctors have him on? I am guessing either vancomycin or flagyl. I would definitely give the probitocs a try. Oh, if he is taking flagyl or vancomycin, make sure you seperate the probitocs from the medicine they have him on by two hours otherwise the antibitoic will just kill the probitoic. Probitocs are best on an empty tummy as well. I hope he gets better soon, this cannot be easy for him.

Thanks. The saniwipes are the ones FROM the hospital. I have been doing the bleach thing too though.

Another question...his butt looks cut up...am I dealing with something else (crohn's related more than the cdiff)? I am going to call the doctor in the morning. This is the worst week for this to happen as my daughters are in the school musical this weekend...I am so afraid of ending up in the hospital this weekend and having to miss (the hospital is 1 1/2 hours away from home). Yes, frustrating, but we keep plugging away. I'm not sure if I'm just being naive or what, but he really is doing great (mentally - especially). And I've started running again (to de-stress) so we seem to be handling things! :/??

His butt could be irritated also because of the C-diff diarhea. Is he using the bathroom alot? I woul get it looked at just to be sure if you are concerned though. I know it is hard to deal when you have a child who is sick. Us mom's are the ones who always seem to worry and carry everything on our shoulders. It is good that you can run and it helps to de-stress. I would call the doc and tell him about your sons irritation down there and see what he thinks. I am glad your son has good spirits, that really makes a difference. Hope you gets on the mend real soon.
