Hi guys,
I've recently been diagnosed with crohns after suffering with it for 5 or so years. Aside from the medicine ive been given, my doctor has given me a few guidelines:
-Don't take Advil.
-Don't smoke.
That's pretty much it. However, I'm unclear if smoking means any type of smoking including marijuana or just cigarettes? I have no interest in smoking cigs, but as a college student, well, I do have interest for weed...

Thank you very much in advance!

Use the search function and search for "weed", you should see a few threads that debate this very topic.

deeply discussed? i think it was hotl discussed!!! and i smoke normal ciggies, it dont do my crohns any harm. sharon xx

Doing your Crohns no harm isn't the same as doing the rest of your body no harm. Even if it helps your Crohns, there IS a tradeoff, Kev has been fighting a brave battle for a while with that tradeoff.

Smoking causes vasal constriction which helps if you happen to be a crohnie bleeder but obviously it does damage to other parts of your body.

As far as weed goes, it can have the same effect as cigs .. if you're inhaling (obviously) its getting into your intestinal tract and irritating it, same as cigs.

There is the added benefit of the medicinal effect of MJ whereas there isn't any real benefit to cigs but the good/bad ratio is up to you.

I would think smoking includes anything you have to "smoke" to obtain. This would include cigarettes, cigars, marijuana, crack, meth.

gah i have too much to say. Tilt, do your research on the medicinal effects of cannabis and decide for yourself if you think avoiding the herb will benefit your Crohn's.

Personally (as almost everyone here already knows) I fully support the medicinal (and recreational) use of cannabis. Since you already smoke recreationally, I strongly suggest the next time you're experiencing a shitty, painful day to give the dank a couple hits.. Don't get blasted high like you would normally with your friends, because the amount you need for medicinal effects is unbelievably low compared to the amount you need for the recreational mindset...

what is the point of me giving up ciggys? i am not gonna live to a ripe old age am ?i would rather die with a ciggy in my hand and be happy than desperate for a ciggy and sad.

There are more humane ways to go than lung cancer...

creepy i do realise what death by cancer is like, my husband died of throat cancer.
i could be killed in a car crash today, with that in mind i live my days like they are my last becasue one day it will be my last.
sharon xx

Sharon, I am personally (note: personally) of the opinion that if one passes from Cigs (not just lung cancer, could be many other ways they harm you), it's not "happy with one in your hand". Could be killed tragically by a car accident, yes, but if you cherish each day, why not do just a slight bit more to ensure there are more of them, surely smoking isn't the only satisfaction or joy you can find. Nobody's saying you can't enjoy life, just that in the end, the statistics and science don't show that you're doing it optimally, to say the least.

But you are right, "your life your choice", but if my own mother said that, I'd passionately remind her of my own feelings and existence. I want to respectfully state if you DO happen to go from them, the consequence would not be isolated to you. :)

benson, i have no parents or husband, they are all dead. ciggys is my only vice and keeps me sane at the moment. i dont drink and i dont sleep around. if i die tomorrow the only thing that i leave behind is my son. i have no one else.

See Sharon, that's your problem. I highly suggest sleeping around and drinking as much as humanly possible.

drew, i think my son would have a few things to say if i had a queue of men at the door, not that will ever happen, the stoma stops that. and as for drinking it gives me a headache.not a hangover before you say anything!!!! so i wil just stick wth the ciggys. but if anyone wants to change my mind they are welcome to try!!!! sharon xx

Maybe do the voyeur thing over the internet? I'm sure you could find plenty of paying customers who have a stoma fetish.

Hey, and it'll pay the medical bills while you're at it. Any disease that pays for itself can't be all that bad.

What he said......

But you dont have to smoke it. You can eat it & even vaporize it (VERY EFFECTIVE). So there are ways to save your lungs but still get the effects.

From my understanding it is the nicotine that aggravates crohns & Mary jane contains no nicotine.

Yes its bad for you to smoke anything,

Marijuana is no exception, even though it does not have a link to cancer that is not the problem it relates to the free radicals which worsen crohn's in some people.

I smoke it, and I know that I get better then worse if I stop.

PEOPLE STOP SMOKING AND GET A VAPE.

Vapourisers are the best way of THC treatment as there is NO tar or free radical damage.

Smoke damage can be minimised by the temprature of the smoke, and how its filtered.

so basically use a diffusor a perculator, and a tar catcher if your going to smoke, and make sure you at least have 1.5L of water in your bong.

Do not smoke joints... they are the worst for you.

Nicotine does not effect crohn's from my understanding.... its the actual smoke itself.

I think there is a risk of using it... but as long as you are conscious of that risk, and watch for signs that it is not masking symptoms, then go for it. One of the big selling points is that it reduces pain and/or helps people cope with chronic pain. I am not a big fan of pain, but there are times when it does have its purposes. The thing of it is, if weed is masking pain, but your disease is getting worse, then you MIGHT be pushing your envelope beyond the point you should.
The other benefit is that it helps destress, and stress is one of those debated points in crohns. The medicos say it isn't related, us crohnies know different. I just think that there are other ways to reduce or cope with stress that don't run the risk of getting you incarcerated. if you've got a doctors script for it, and can source it legally... well, that's one less thing to worry about. I did it when I was young, still know folks my age who do so just for pure recreational use. It just would be bad to end up in a lockup for possession where you have to use a 'public' toilet... no stall, no fan, no privacy.. And picture being someones jail house 'bitch' while suffering from crohns. Thanks, but no thanks. crohns itself is enuff of a pain.

Kev... I missed you!

Hey Kev, I know that it works, the 'acid' reflux problem in my bowel is gone..... and I dont goto the bathroom as often or as painfully.

Im getting a vapouriser soon, smoking is bad for you.

I dont mind if people think im wrong, we are all entitled to our own beleifs, but if someone wants to argue with me on this, ive got about 3 boxes of UNI reports arguing in my favor.

My personal opinion is that if you smoke with a vaporizer then weed is great for Crohns. As long as you live in a state where it is legal and not in the bible belt like me.

In Idaho getting caught with a vaporizer (or any other paraphenalia) can mean a thousand dollar fine and a year in jail.
