Does anyone have Crohn's without the tell-tale frequent trips to the bathroom? Anyone go one time or less than that per day? If so, what is your disease like?

My son has severe disease, we are deciding on surgery. My son does not have D. He usually has bm once a day or once every other day. His disease is located at his ileocecal valve, extends a bit up into terminal ileum and even though visually his colon looked normal biopsies showed inflammation in the cecum(this colonoscopy was in June).

There are several kids on the forum that don't experience D. I think my little penguin's DS doesn't.

At his most frequent, my son has two bowel movements per day. Usually he goes once per day or less often.

Same here chronic constipation .
Every once in a while loose bloody stool- not often in three years .
Disease - stomach duodendum terminal ileum caecum sigmoid colon and worst in the rectum .

My son has constipation as well. He did take miralax daily to help, now that he is in remission he has been able to stop taking it. He goes once daily now. He never has urgency.

Thank you all for your responses. I read a lot about D, so I was just wondering if her infrequent stools made sense. I guess they do. It doesn't seem like there is any correlation between frequency and disease location. I was wondering about that too.

Our GI said that constipation is more common with small bowel disease and D is more common with large bowel. With small bowel you are likely to see weight loss, vitamin deficiency and Protein loosing enteropathy, because of inflammation and inability to absorb.

Well, that's too bad, but it's good to know I guess. I know she has mod - severe inflammation in her large bowel, but in a few days we do the small bowel follow through. I guess it's good to be mentally prepared for small bowel disease to be active. She did have low albumin on a lab - just a little low - but I guess that would make sense for the losing protein. Otherwise she's just been anemic. No weight loss, but no gain in the last 8 months.

That info helps a lot, thanks.

Pilgrim- I was convinced my son didn't have Crohn's because he didn't have diarrhea or frequent stools. He never wakes at night to use the bathroom. That info contradicts pretty much everything I read about Crohn's symptoms. It seems like most of the Crohn's symptoms detailed online are based on adults with Crohn's. But even some adults never diarrhea. What I've learned about Crohn's is that there doesn't seem to be a norm. Something most pediatricians don't even realize. Our peds were sure my son didn't have Crohn's because he didn't have bloody diarrhea and didn't lose 10 per cent of his weight. Not ture.

Good luck with the small bowel follow-through. We chose to do the MRE to avoid radiation, but I think that is not an option for a 3 year-old. But something to keep in mind when she is older. My son also had slightly low albumin, hemoglobin and hematocrit on the low end of normal. All other labs normal other than elevated CRP and fecal calprotectin.
Is your daughter diagnosed or are you in that process?

My daughter also started off with constipation. We would have to give her Miralax every day and she went to bathroom once a day at the most. She had inflammation in her stomach, terminal ileum and all through her colon when she was diagnosed.

However, in the last few months that's changed and she has diarrhea several times a day. I guess these kids like to keep us guessing!

Hope your daughter feels better soon!

That being said I would assume that it is feasible to have both d and constipation when the Crohn's is in both the small and large intestine?:confused2:

Yes, my daughter was diagnosed after she was in for upper and lower scopes. The upper scopes looked fine but he had to stop at the first bend in the colon because her colon wall was a mess and there was a concern about perforation. The biopsies showed granulomas thus solid Crohn's diagnosis once the path report was in.
But we have no idea what is going on, if anything, in her small intestine until next week.
I don't know if we did the fecal calprotectin, but her sed rate was 65 before she went in for scopes. Her labs were similar to Momtotwo's son. The story there is similar.
Grumpy1 (I love your name and your town, we lived there when we were first married and were sad to leave) I think my daughter did have both D and constipation. Every other day it was D - but only once. Not sure but interesting thought.

I used to until I had a resection. I have not stopped going since BMs came back after the surgery.

Before the resection, my run to the hospital issue was always constipation, which I'm sure some of know is extremely painful.

I have chronic constipation I can't go unless I have laxatives even then it doesn't work I just fart lol I was diagnosed in July with Crohn's in the iliem they found an absess before I was pooing like 3 times a day I've never been normal which makes me wonder if I had this thing since childhood yeah it can be painful and really uncomfortable

For 2.5 yrs straight D and urgent - now a mix a couple days d and couple days constipation with cramping and bloating and general yuck! Not sure which way to go here back on prednisone because I reacted to humira so the latest talk is methotrexate (not sure I spelt it correctly) with humira to see if that works and hopefully it will get the crohn's under control

If I go twice in a day, I want to have a poop party for myself. If I skip a day, it's pretty miserable and seems to be because I let myself get dehydrated.

I have crohns in the small and large bowel, but I have fairly loose b/m's at most 2x per day. It's mostly bloating and pain that are my symtpoms. If I'm in a flare, I have crohnic diarrhea with blood and then after a few days just start being unable to keep any fluids down.
