Doxycycline for Prednisone acne?

I went to a dermatologist...told her that the acne was from Prednisone. She gave me prescriptions for a whole mess of stuff, including Docyclycline tablets (100mg, 1x day). The other stuff is all topical, no antibiotics.

I went ahead and had the prescription filled, but thought maybe I should ask:

Anyone had experience, good or bad, with this? Advice? She prescribed enough for 2 months, by which time I'll be totally off the Prednisone.

Thanks!

doxycycline may not be a good choice, it may make your crohn's worse as it has actually been identified as a risk factor and a possible cause of crohn's disease.

do topical treatment instead, the only thing i really recommened is strong glycolic acid treatments to exfoliate, and maybe a product called retinaldehyde, which is just about as strong as retina a creams, but doesnt irritate the skin as much.

ive used it all and believe the doxycycline was one thing that contributed to my crohn's. but its was the augmentin/amoxicillin i took that obviously(to me) destroyed my bacteria and led to crohn's shortly after.

and this is why i believe a fecal microbiota transplant leads to remission in ibd and seems to cure it- http://www.crohnsforum.com/showthread.php?t=52400

Sounds like maybe hold off on the Doxycycline. One of the topical treatments contains Erithromycin...I winder if that's best avoided, too?

I'm using the face wash (w/ salicylic acid) and cream (w/ benzoyl peroxide), plus Tea Tree oil for now. And taking extra Vitamin C.

My son was on doxycycline when his symptoms that lead to CD diagnosis started. He was also on it for acne and was into the end of his first month when he started having problems.

Although I don't think the doxycycline caused his CD, I do think it may have triggered the flare.

Having said that, he recently had a skin infection and went on doxy for seven days to clear it, it cleared what acne he had as well.

Be careful with the topicals that are antibiotics as well, such as clindamycin which has this warning:

•tell your doctor if you have or have ever had inflammatory bowel disease (IBD; condition in which all or part of the lining of the intestine is swollen, irritated, or has sores) or severe diarrhea caused by an antibiotic. Your doctor may tell you not to use topical clindamycin

Our GI wanted my son to avoid all the "mycins" topicals while his CD was not under control.

Gotcha. Glad I asked. I'll skip the Erithromycin, too.

Funny thing...the Prednisone cleared up the acne I had...then gave me a different type! I had smooth, sensitive skin with occasional cystic acne (seems like linked to hormonal changes).

I had a few weeks of completely clear skin at high doses of Prednisone, then, when I began to taper off it, what I got was rough, red skin with whiteheads in patches (corners of nose, corners of mouth....middle of my eyebrow?!) Very weird!

Now, after tapering down to 20 mg., I've got both! The cystic acne on my cheeks, the rough skin all along my jawline, and the same patches of whiteheads.

The dermatologist didn't seem to think it was unusual, but it's unusual to me!

Still, Prednisone is my friend, and if this (plus wicked insomnia) is the worst side effect, I'll survive just fine. Tapering down to 10 mg in a couple of days...we'll see what fresh hell that brings.

My son opted for glycolic acid peels and was told by his derm to was his face with a mix of corn meal(not corn meal mix) and I think cetaphil. Mix into a creamy not pasty mix. It really worked wonders along with the glycolic peels but at that time he did not have cystic acne though he does sometimes get that on the back of his ear lobes. The GP said at a certain point they can drain them but my son didn't seem to keen on that idea.

Took doxycycline for an unrelated illness and I didn't mind it at all. It gave me very vivid dreams though. My friend experienced the same thing when he was on it too.
