I was hospitalized friday the 24th of June for severe swelling and pain in the entire large intestine. I was put on a liquid diet and given options of pain killers morphine and oxy. I refused all of it. I figured i could do better. I have tried many things since my diagnosis in October to assist treatment but never a total fast. Knowing that I was going to be on a sodium hydrochloride IV for a few days I decided to do a total bowel rest fasting for the weekend. I did not even drink more than a few sips of water throughout these days. I took no painkillers so i could monitor my progress. Pain is your body telling you something is wrong and the degree of pain can tell you how severe the problem is.
I came into the hospital at a 5 in the all day pain scale, and an 8 when I eat. The doctors told me I HAVE to upgrade to either humira or remicade. I refused, telling them that I wanted another chance to prove to myself that I can treat it with my current medicine and a few major tweeks on diet, exercise and relaxation techniques. I was hissed at by a few M.D.s but not by my G.I. doctor Falzarano who gave me a commending acceptance of my will to try harder. The fact that I could explain my course of action and be commended by a 70 year old partially retired G.I. doctor, who continues his volunteer work mostly out of passion, was the glimmer of hope i needed.
When I was released on monday after the fast my all day pain was sitting at a 2 or less. and eating pain since then, up til today has decreased to between a 2 and 4 depending on quantity of food. The severe gas has stopped by 80%. The abdominal swelling is almost non existent inbetween meals. Im sure the solumedrol injections (basically prednisone) i was given at the hospital has alot to do with the decrease in swelling but i will not give all the credit to that.
My new diet consists of alot less sugar. matter a fact i look for reduced sugar/no sugar added EVERYTHING. I bought !00% juice drinks, avacadoes, and many soft fruits, low fat yogurt, cottage cheese, v8, vanilla soymilk, rice krispis cereal, cream of rice(like cream of wheat), soups which are low in sodium/fiber and only few soft vegetable included. i dont eat the chicken in the soup. i also bought fresh ahi tuna, organic chicken breast tenders, canned tuna in water, miso soup with tofu, and finally low sugar boost nutritional drinks of all flavors. I also bought caffeine free green tea, peppermint, and honey chamomile tea bags. small meal portioning is the key i believe.
My daily medicine list is as follows. I need to add that months prior to hospitalization i was drinking alot of pure aloe vera juice as an anti inflammatory not knowing that it is a strong laxative and water retainer which flushes medicine from your body before it can be fully absorbed. my blood tests in the hospital showed i had little of my steroid medicines in my body. now i know why. NEW MEDICINE AND SUPPLEMENT LIST: azathioprine 150mg, prednisone 60mg(hi moonface), triple probiotic multivitamin multimineral pill, lysine, fish oil 3600mg, tums calcium carbonate 750mg as needed for acid blocker/calcium supplement for steroid bone density loss.
My exercise program doesnt go into effect until july 5th after I have had sufficient rest and allow my body to adjust. I take long moderate paced walks around the neighborhood at nite regularly for exercise. I take chamomile baths to relax along with many frequent marijuana smoke sessions. Many. I also make tea out of marijuana as well and drink it.
Well there you have it. its only wednesday but i can tell you that I already feel much better by my desicions to not take the humira/remicade route and to try out a slightly more natural treatment. I dont care if I cant eat hot wings or drink liquor anymore as much as i care about attempting to reach remmision without super strong pharmaceuticals. the risks are unacceptable to me. crohns has been around for a very long time and pharmacology has not. im working on finding out what worked for crohns sufferers pre-modern medicine and incorporating it into my own personal lifestyle. I think im starting out well considering 3 out of 4 doctors told me that humira/remicade/bowel removal was my only options less than a week ago. my will power is stronger than those odds. thanks for reading and wish me luck.

:goodluck::goodluck::goodluck: kaniela!

I so hope you have continued success. Please keep us posted!

Imuran started a 4 year remission for me awhile back. I took it for a year, and was med free for 3 more years after. I attribute it to quitting smoking, quitting binge drinking, and eating healthy foods, along with moderate exercise.

Good luck! Its a good thing to be accountable and responsible for your health.
