eating disorders?

hey, i was diagnosed with crohns at 8, im now 14. i had awful weight loss, being at a low of 50lbs until i was about 10. i weigh about 100lbs and am 5"5 now. i have been on 6mp, prednisone, methatrexate, infliximab/remicade, had a failed resection, used the nasogastric tube for 5-10 sets of 6 weeks and also have had a PEG tube which is now removed. i have had counselling to try and get me to eat.

since i was about 12, i have been desperately trying to lose weight. i would say that i have been showing very minor signs of anorexia, and they are increasing. lately, i got to the final 2 of a national modelling competition, and from then on, it has just been getting worse. when i used to be very sick, i was very skinny. in pain, yes, but nothing bad was happening. in the past 2 years my mother was diagnosed with cancer, and i have been cutting down on "bad" foods and i was wondering if i now wanted to be thin again because i linked skinniness with happier times?

anybodys opinions/advice is apreciated

Maybe its the way you see foods, What do you mean by "bad" foods, foods that make you ill or foods that are seen in life as bad?

MAybe learning about foods and cooking will help understand what is good for you and what is bad, you can tbeat a tastey home cooked meal :) Personally I cannot eat a lot in one sitting, im more of a grazer and will have 5-7 snacks rather than the usual 3 big meals as I find it easier (put a big meal infront of me and already I know i wont eat it all)

What about active sports? I know kickboxing, rock climbing etc makes meal feel really hungry afterwards.

I think writing your thread it seems you dont want to be superskinny (btw on a sidenote didnt a famous model just die from anorexia). But its like fat people wanting to be skinny. Its not going to happen overnight and will take time. Slowly upping the amount of food is much better way of going forward than trying to binge.

Maybe a lads way of looking at the situation (how to gain weight rather than look at the emotional side .. not too good at that lol) but I hope you become happy with your body no matter what size and happier in yourself. ps hope your mum gets better

Rygon; She weighs 100 lbs. This is NOT a fat person wanting to be skinny. She is skinny enough already.

To the OP: My advice is that you talk to both a nutritionist and a psychiatrist. If counseling is not working then find a new counselor. You need to learn to love yourself, but its not going to happen overnight and its not going to happen without your active participation. Lots of times these illnesses (both crohn's and anorexia) manifest during the times we are stressed and feel out of control. You mother being ill probably makes you feel very out of control, so you turn to controlling food so you feel you have control over something.

This is not good. You are 14 and your body is still growing. You need any nutrition you can get.

Sorry I wasnt saying she was a fat person wanting to be skinny, I was saying its as hard to gain weight as it is to lose it.
Exercise can help you gain weight as well. Its part of being healthy, and I find it makes you feel happier.

Agree with the growing up part. This is where your body need all the energy and nutrition it can get to build your body up as best as it can ready for the rest of your life

I agree with Lydia, it is very worrying that you are wanting to be skinnier despite the fact you are currently only just in the normal weight range for your height and age.If you were to lose more than a couple of pounds you would be underweight.
You need to se a child psychiatrist as you have many issues that need to be addressed for someone of your age. Having a long term illness is bad enough but to have a mum with cancer is even harder.

100lbs is definately not thin enough!
i do netball 1.5hrs/week, cheerleading 4hours/week, run everyday, and swim.
bad foods as in food that will make me fat, and also bad foods as in those that flare up my crohns (most dairy products)

It sounds a little to me like you are using cutting out foods as some way to control your life in times when you are feeling anxious or upset.

I think maybe deep down you already know that you have some sort of eating disorder as you know think that your eating habits aren't as they should be and that your desire to be thinner isn't healthy.

Have you spoken to anyone you know about it? Like, your parents or a friend?

Hi there

I cant give you much advice, but i also have an eating disorder. A lot of people dont recognise it as a real disorder, but it is. I have SED (Selective Eating Disorder), ive had it since i was about 2 years old, and its only now (im 23), that i looked for help and i am seeing a hypnotherapist, and it is helping me a lot. I have more confidence in myself, and less pressure from around me to try new foods. Gradually my range of foods that i will eat is increasing, and i can see a positive outlook :)

Like other people have said, there are no quick fixes, and things will take time - but there is always light at the end of the tunnel.

This is what leads me to believe that you are in need of help. You have a very distorted self image, IMO. On top of counselling, talking with a nutritionist may also be helpful. You are setting yourself up for all kinds of health problems, like osteoporosis and other problems, if you dont get adequate nutrition during your adolescent period. You can say goodbye to all your activities if you do get osteoporosis.
