Hello, I am new to the forums and was finally diagnosed with crohns a few weeks ago. I am confused about the affects of what I do or don't eat. My GI gave me a list of guidelines but if I eat something that is generally not suggested say raw vegetables and then do or do not get ill from them are there long term consequences? Can the foods irritate the bowl with or without me knowing and in the long term cause a bowel obstruction?

Hi BecDoll, welcome to the forum. Everybody is different with what they can & cannot eat. This is a highly unique disease and nobody's got the same trigger foods. So you're going to have to go through some trial and error to find out what yours are.

There was a good thread recently by Regular Joe on some very general guidelines of what foods are generally to be avoided (again, you may be able to eat some of these). Here's the link:

Welcome Becdoll!! You have come to the right place for answers and support. Diet is not the do all end all but when you are flaring it is best to stay on a low residue diet, there are many threads here and googling it too. Raw veggies are rarely tolerated and because we have crohns we dont have the enzymes to break it down and that causes an obstruction which is the most painful part of Crohns. Stay away from sugar and alcohol, and for the most part eat well, chew well and avoid stress. Lots of people here to answer all your questions, no matter how dumb YOU think the questions are, there isnt any, so ask away and join us. We are here to help, so sorry you had to be here, but we fully understand how you feel. Hang in there!
