Hello everyone!

Do any of you guys suffer from eczema as well as IBD? I know one other person who does and for both of us it's terrible on our hands in particular.

I'm having a bit of an eczema nightmare at the moment, it's springing up in places I've never had it before so wondering if anyone else thinks the two could be related?

Thanks in advance!

Could well be! I've been going to GP's for it for years although only diagnosed with Crohn's in April this year. We all agree I must have had it for several years though. I'm always given various topical creams, some steroidal and some not (usually when I have it on my face they give me protopic 0.01%.) I've been given antibiotics a few times too as it often gets infected on my hands.

One doctor did do some fruit allergy tests but these all came back clear so it's never gone further than that. I rarely go to the doctors for it anymore as the skin on my hands is so thin from using steroid creams for so long. Maybe if I persist they will refer me to a dermatologist. I've been taking azathioprine for 4 weeks now so maybe that will help reduce it if it's a Crohn's/immune related thing?

Interestingly I also have severe acne rosacea which is under good control at the moment although again the treatment is antibiotics. I do worry about resistance.

It could be the crohns or if your on meds it could be that.I do get itchy skin, I have been percribed Diprobase for it. My skin would itch me crazy especialy after a bath.
With diprobase you can apply it after and/or before taking a bath.
Hope you get somthing for it.

I have had eczema all my life and used to get it pretty bad on my hands (from age 11 well into adulthood). I haven't had a breakout on my hands for a while and I frequently use a steroid ointment. My eczema always flares up when my crohn's does. I have it at different times, too, but it's generally a good indication of nflammation in my gut.

I've had eczema since I was about 4 but it's definitely got worse towards my late teens and early twenties (around the time the Crohn's became active.)

Mine doesn't even seem to improve really, it's either bad or terrible! I've just been given a stronger steroid cream which was improving it but it's now back to cracking and itching like mad. I'm also using epaderm to moisturise.

Yep. I have it only on my hands. Started about a year ago. It gets To the point where my hands crack and bleed every time unbend my hand. GI previews diprosone with helps a lot when it's bad but doesn't prevent anything anything. During the winter I end up cycling on and off it every 2-3 weeks.

It's weird, it can settle down quite a lot but it never clears up completely. This is the worst it's ever been, all over the palm and heel of my right hand and just on the heel of the left. Like you say it's cracked open and any movement opens it all up and then it just weeps. Spent quite a long time on antibiotics last time it was on my hands as it all got infected.

I've been to see a different GP who has given me clobaderm 0.05 which has worked a treat, within 5 days you wouldn't have known it was ever there! I can't use that potent a steroid for too long though, the skin is already so thin. At first I thought it was something I was coming into contact with because it was on my hands, but I have a new theory.

I've spent months barely able to eat and I've been on a complete liquid diet. I'm just doing partial liquid and partial solid food now. Is it possible that some kind of food allergy could cause this? The timing is a bit odd that as soon as I can eat again it all flares up worse than ever? I plan to ask my dietitian about that next month.

Yeah I get what you mean about the steroids. When I looked Diprosone up I was like is this really necessary because it says this is pretty strong but within a week, 2 at worst my hands look perfect. And then back to bad a while latter.

Food allergy: maybe. Especially if it's a finger food I suppose it's possible. Maybe you should ask you gp for some allergy testing (or a referral to do so).
