Hey everyone.

I have a question regarding my Husband this time, not me :). Well he has been having some issues ( well actually he feels just fine), but they found many tiny stones in both his kidneys and some of his blood work is off. He now is going to do a 24 hour urine catch. Well with the routine blood test they found that his bilirubin blood level was at 2.1 ( ref range is 0.0-1.0) which is a bit elevated. All his other liver tests on the panel were normal. The doctor did not even seem overly worried about this since all his other liver blood tests were in the normal range. I did some digging of our health files and I found that back in 2009 his bilirubin was also just a bit elevated then too ( it was 1.4 ( ref range was 0-1.2) so it was only a little elevated at that time. The doctor did not even mention it back then and I just noticed it now.

I do know that bilirubin has to do with Jaundice. I looked at my husbands eyes and there is a very light yellowish tinge. You cannot directly see it, I mean he has to lift up his eye lids and you can see it in the corners of the white part of the eyes and where the eye lids cover the eye. WTH, I am freaking out. What could be causing this? I do plan on asking the doctor to look more into this when we see her in a couple weeks. It might have been like this for a long time and I just did not notice it. He says he feels just fine though. Honestly, if it were not for me being persistent with his doctor and pushing her to order the Abdominal ultrasound and kidney ultrasound we never would have known about the kidney issue with all the stones so I guess I just don't feel reassured that the doctor did not seem concerned about this. I am just so mad that I have to advocate for my own health all the time and now my husbands because doctors just do not seem to want to do their jobs or they just seem so passive! WTH???

Anyone on here ever have this issue with the bilirubin? my husband use to drink like a couple of beers nightly but he stopped that since we found out he has these stones. But he never really drank a lot and when he had this blood test done he had not had any alcohol for like 2 weeks. The only medication he is on is allegra for allergies daily. He was taking supplements( Vit D, Calcium, and Vit B complex, and Vit C). Any ideas??

Have they said anything about Gilbert's syndrome? I have that and my bilirubin is always elevated. It has been for over 20 years now and has never been a problem for me.

Thanks for the reply! I think the nephrologist mentioned something about a condition that some people can have that is not dangerous that will elevate the bilirubin. She did not really get into it though as she was more concerned with his kidneys. I googled it yesterday and did read up on the Gilberts syndrome. I am not sure, but with this Gilberts syndrome, wouldn't his bilirubin always be high? I mean back in 2009 his was just slightly elevated and now it is worse. I am not sure how the Gilberts syndrome works though, does the bilirubin fluctuate( go up and down?)

It goes up and down with me. There is a way the bilirubin is measured. I believe it is called direct and indirect. With Gilbert's one will always be above normal and the other will be normal. I just can't remember which. The doctor that diagnosed me with Gilbert's told me always inform doctors I have Gilbert's because they'll want to do all the liver test if I didn't. When I had surgery in March I had a resident all worried about my elevated bilirubin and wouldn't let me have Tylenol because of it. My attending physician had to explain to him it wasn't a problem.

I also have an elevated bilirubin count, and have recently been told it is down to gilberts syndrome. My blood work has been looked back as far as 2008 when i was first diagnosed and it has always been a little elevated, but will keep going up and down.
Hope he finds out what is wrong soon :)

Oh wow, ok. Well hopefully this is all this is. Is it common for a person with Gilberts to have a slight yellowing in the white part of the eyes? I mean with my husband it is not very visible unless he actually pulls his eyelid up or down and then you can see a little of lighter yellow tinge around the corners. I mean put it this way, no doctor even noticed it. I did not either until I actually looked close at his eyes.

Thanks for the replies, I appreciate it. I am hoping this bilirubin elevation is just that and nothing serious.

yes certainly, Gilberts can cause jaundice, supposedly caused by elevated levels of unconjugated bilirubin in the bloodstream.
I only found out about Gilberts over 1 week ago at my normal gastro aptmt, google it and youll find lots of info :)

Thanks for the reply. I am going to look more into the Gilberts syndrome and will definitely ask the doctor next time we are there..
